Can any researcher help me figure out the strange thing that has
happened to my IPOD shuffle? If you can its ten bucks. My shuffle has
a 512mb capacity. Yet for reasons unbeknownst to me it has 312 mb FULL
when there ARE NO VISABLE SONGS ON IT IN ITUNES!. They are either on
there and "stuck" or something else is wrong.
I unintstalled ITUNES and re installed it and the problem is still
there. MORE WEIRDNESS. i just double checked in and now it seems to be
freeing up more space to load more songs. WHAT ON EARTH IS UP. Can any
of you tech geniuses help me out here.??

Hi ravenmaid-ga,

The problem appears to be with the software and/or configuration on
the iPod Shuffle itself and not the iTunes software.

This following Knowledge Base article should resolve your problem:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300701

Here are the steps to follow for quick reference:

Restoring iPod shuffle to factory settings
------------------------------------------

1. Download the latest iPod Updater from:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
The update contains the latest software for all models of iPod.

2. Double-click the software install file and follow the onscreen
instructions to install the iPod shuffle Update.

3. Open the iPod Updater.
Mac OS X: The updater is located in the /Applications/Utilities/iPod
Software Updater/ folder.
Windows: Click the Start button, point to All Programs, and then point
to iPod. Click the name of the most recent iPod Updater.

4. Move the switch on the iPod to the Off position and wait 5 seconds.

5. After the iPod Software Updater has opened, connect iPod shuffle to
your computer.
6. Follow the onscreen instructions to update or restore iPod shuffle software.

NOTE: Everything on the shuffle will be wiped out, so make sure you've
got all your songs/files stored elsewhere. By doing this you are
effectively resetting your shuffle to the day you first got it.

If you have any problems understanding the information above please
post a clarification and I will try to respond promptly.

Cheers,
answerguru-ga

First attempt failure; I followed your instructions. I downloaded the
massive IPOD updater. But when I went to start, all programs, the and
then IPOD the only update there was from last year in January 11 2005
. Meaning it was 13 months old.

Where is the NEW update I just downloaded?

How do I get IT to be the one I click on? It wasn't there. Can you
tell me how to delete the OLD IPOD updater so the only one on there is
the new one OR where the one I just downloaded is.

Also the most mysterious thing you said was: Point 4:

Move the switch on the iPod to the Off position and wait 5 seconds."

Move it to the off? ITS ALREADY ON THE OFF!! I KEEP IT ON OFF. This is
normal. No one keeps it on "ON" who isn't listing to it! HUH?

So if its already ON off then what? And what is the point in doing this?

Can we try this again please.

Hi ravenmaid,

These instructions are directly from the Apple (taken from the
Knowledge Base link).

According to the site, the updater contains update software for all of
the different types of iPods. For the shuffle, the latest update was
on 2005-11-17 and it is version 1.1.3. Please check to see if that is
the version you are currently trying to access. If it isn't, then did
you actually install the update or just download it?

Regarding point 4, that was just to ensure the shuffle is off when you
are doing this.

I downloaded the upgrader again and when I plugged it in it said IPOD
MANAGER INTERNAL ERROR.

I BELIEVE IT SAID THE FIRST TIME TOO. CAN YOU FILL ME IN WHAT THIS MEANS?

Is the unit broken?

I called tech support and they had NO Idea how to fix in fact had
never heard of the problem before. You didn't help me fix the unit
which was a quid pro quo of paying you ten bucks but I want to leave
you 7 for trying. How do I do that?
Reason this answer was rejected by ravenmaid-ga:
The QUESTION I SUBMITTED STATED CLEARLY " I Will pay ten dollars if
you can help me fix the problem" The problem never got fixed. I did
everything she told me and
it (my IPOD SHUFFLE) is still jammed up with invisable songs that
dont' play and I can't get off! It was a quid pro quo question. IF you
do THIS for me Ill pay you ten dollars. I would like to give her a TIP
though but not ten bucks because the shuffle is still not working and
this was a clear condition in the question.

heh, not to be rude, but perhaps you can check if you have some files
saved on your ipod shuffle that aren't songs/recognized by ipod
shuffle.

since ipod shuffle works like a USB stick, you may have put some files in there?

also, check your itunes settings, there should be a setting somewhere
which allocates how much memory is used for songs, vs. other files.

I admit your first suggestion would seem likely and NO you weren't being rude.

THere are no files other than songs on the unit. ONLY songs and
PODCAST downloads which are still MP3 files.

Try this Plug it into an XP computer when it comes up undermy computer
format it like you are formatting a normal drive and then restore from
the ipod updater.
