First of all, I'm not positive on the leaglaties of this. But here is
the question.

I would like to know if there is a website which I can download high
quality prints of art, Like van Gogh, Monet, Whistler, etc......

I would like to download them as JPG images and have them sent off for
print for private use in my home.

Are there any websites that provide such a service?

Thanks.

Dear tbonecopper-ga,
Not exactly what you require because I suspect there may be copyright
issues with what you want to do. Some galleries will print them out
for you at A2, A3, A4 sizes. Have a look at the National Gallery site.
Does this answer your question? If so, I will try and find other
galleries with the same service.

Well, I appreciate the constructive criticism regarding JPEG quality
and the loading times. However, I would like to say that I don't care
if it's a PNG, PSD, etc.... file as long as it's high quality. I do
know what the term pixelation means, and yes, that's what happens when
you zoom in and in and in on an image.

Preferrably not having to pay for the art work to be downloaded would
be a nice benefit. But I don't forsee it happening.

Thanks

Also, I find it hard to fathom that the copyright can extend into 2006
from a painting created in the 1800s.

The original work carries copyright for the normal period. Copyright
also lies in the photograph. That's partly why art galleries do not
let you take photographs of the original paintings. They can then
control distribution of copies.

If the National Gallery answer does not meet your requirements, then
perhaps something like the Bridgeman Art Library where you can
purchase digital images, but you will see the costs are quite
expensive and rights issues are involved depending on the use of the
image.

Again, like the National Gallery, the can provide ready printed
posters for you from this site.

A jpg is a compressed image designed for the web. It is compressed so
you don't have to wait for 5 hours for a image to load. It must load
in seconds. As such, because of the compression, there aren't nearly
enough pixels to produce a poster or any decent quality.

Ever put a piece of paper in a photocopier and kept hitting the
enlarge button. See what the edges look like after a while. Same
thing would happen if you try to enlage a low quality jpg image.
