Hi,

I have large files in my XP "WINDOWS" folder. Here is a list of them
all: n-uvtcfz, n_dxlcit,
n_eglycd, n_jrvcqe, n_nzvoui, n_pcqkii, n_pgkhuz, n_povnih, n_amniql,
n_bprhwx. They are 4.00GB in size each, in notepad, what are they?
Can I delete them, I have a 55GB drive and running out of space.
(I've run spybot, mcafee virus scan, stopzilla, have downloaded all of
microsoft's updates and used disc-cleanup numerous times with all
boxes checked as well as defragged the drive 10 times. Still have
large red fragmented files showing in analysis.)

Thanks!

The file extensions are:

n_amniql.log, n_bprhwx.txt, n_povnih.txt, n_pgkhuz.log, n_pcqkii.txt,
n_nzvoui.txt, n_jrvcqe.txt, n_eglycd.log, n_dxlcit.txt, n_uvtcfz.log.

I just compressed my hard drive and now I got all my space back and
those files are now listed as "size 4.00GB" and "8.00KB size on disc"?
I don't know how that works, but is that good?

Thanks!

It would help to know what the file extension is (.exe, .dll, for
instance). You can turn on file extensions in Windows Explorer (not
Internet Explorer) using

Tools -> Folder Options -> View

then UNCLICK the box for "Hide File Extensions for Known File Types".

Hey don't delete those - they're my backups!

Just kidding.

Run a surface layer disc check. 4Gb but 8K on disc sounds very odd....

I would have said "these are huge out of control log files probibly
generated by a firewall" but with the addition of a .dll, and a
random string...

So, unfortunatly, i would bet that this is the doing of some mal-ware
not detected by McAffe.
The 'n_' at the begging is probibly a string that the virus looks for,
and the xxxxxx afterwards probibly is there to hinder detection from
an AV.
4Gb is the limit i think in XP of any file size....so it's no
co-incidence there exactly 40Gb.

When you open the files, other than a long wait, what do you have
there? jumbled nonsense? If so, post the first few lines he and we
can see..
