- The North American packaging machinery market in US$ dollars (2005)
North American packaging machinery market = $4.90 billion
Emerging Trends in the North American Packaging Machinery Market:
Three things to watch out for!
?In conclusion it can be said that the factors that are set to change
the face of the $4.90 billion North American packaging machinery
market are:
Increasing trend of outsourcing packaging needs to contract packagers
(CPs) whether domestic or international
Continued emergence and adoption of new and alternative packaging
styles dictated by large retailers and North American demographics
A predilection of the North American consumers for fresh food products
in convenient packages and hence the emergence of modified atmosphere
packaging (MAP) for food products
Their exponential growth coupled with the financial muscle of today?s
equity markets is likely to change the face of the packaging machinery
market irrevocably.?

MBD Market & Business Development provides the following information
for the UK market.
?The UK market for packaging machinery is expected to decline during
2005, albeit at a negligible level, to £428.6 million at MSP. Demand
within the industry increased year-on-year between 2001 and 2004,
culminating in overall growth of 16% in value terms to a five year
peak of £429.4 million during the latter year. Much of the growth
during the review period has been buoyed by the continued growth in
consumer spending since 2001. However, the delayed impact of interest
rate increases during 2004 are expected to slow spending in 2005,
resulting in an anticipated negligible decline in sales during the
year.?
Market Forecast 2006-2010
?The UK market for packaging machinery is forecast to increase
year-on-year during the forecast period, although levels of growth are
expected to remain modest. Between 2005 and 2010 MBD expect the value
of the UK market to increase by 6% in real terms, with annual growth
levels not expected to surpass 3%. The forecasted market growth is in
part due to the expectation that current trends within the market will
continue during the short term future.?

?The French market has shown slow, stable growth over the review period from
2000-2002, a noticeable difference from the double digit rates in the
late nineties when end-user clients, particularly food and beverage
producers invested heavily in new packaging equipment. This slowdown
can largely be attributed to the slower economic growth and general
over investment in production capacity.?

?World demand for packaging machinery is projected to rise over 4 per
cent per year (including price increases) through 2008 to over $31
billion, with developing nations expected to register the strongest
market gains, according to a recently published report by Freedonia.?
Market Share by Region - 2003
?In 2003, the world packaging machinery market was valued at $24.7
billion, with 38 per cent of the total accounted for by Asia/Pacific
countries, followed by North America with 26 per cent and Western
Europe with 24 per cent.?
Emerging markets - Latin America
?The most promising markets are those emerging in Latin America and
the Asia/Pacific region, where faster population growth and more
rapidly increasing levels of industrial output will stimulate demand
for packaging machinery in industries such as food, beverage,
chemicals, pharmaceutical and personal care products.?
?The Latin America region, in particular Argentina, will benefit from
macroeconomic recovery after the early 2000s recession.?
?China will record some of the strongest increases, with packaging
machinery demand rising over 8 per cent annually through 2008. India
will also post strong gains due to ongoing industrialisation and
impressive gains in fixed investment. The country is particularly
dependent on foreign suppliers for technologically advanced, automated
equipment, since most locally made machinery is not considered up to
global standards?.

Opportunities for Packaging Machinery in BRAZIL 2002-2003
The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute January 2002
Executive Summary
?The Packaging Industry market in Brazil represented total investments
of US$10.8 billion and a total volume of 5.8 million tons across all
sectors in 2000. The food sector alone accounted for 35.2% of these
investments, representing 50% of total tonnage consumption ? clearly
the largest packaging opportunity sector in the market. Total
packaging machines, equipment and spare parts imports reached US$155.5
million, totaling 749,000 tons originating from 14 countries. Italy,
ranks as the largest exporter of packaging machinery to Brazil,
representing 38% of the market largely due to its cheaper and more
flexible equipment. The US ranks third with a total of US$19.8
million, with machines known mostly for endurance and large volume
capacities, as well as preferred financing.?
?Packaging machinery and equipment imports remain at large a European dominated
market, with the European Union representing US$861.6 million of
accumulated imports to Brazil between 1996 and 2000, compared to only
US$135.3 million from NAFTA.?
?Meanwhile, Brazil has a significant installed base and currently
ranks as the seventh largest packaging machine manufacturer in the
world, with over 58% of all exports destined to the US and European
Union markets. The southern cone (Mercosur) still accounts for a small
portion of Brazilian imports but may soon increase as Argentine
manufacturers begin to displace European competitors as well as
national manufacturers by offering low-end machinery largely due to
its recent currency devaluation.?

Chile
- Total imports into Chile of food processing and packaging equipment in 2001.
Total imports into Chile of food processing and packaging equipment
totaled $172 million in 2001.
Food Processing and Packaging Equipment
?In 2001, total imports into Chile of food processing and packaging
equipment totaled $172 million. The U.S. share was $98 million. Of
late, the food processing and packaging industry in Chile has had
relatively little growth due to the slower than expected economic
recovery. In addition, exports of food products and packaging to
Argentina, Chile?s most important consumer of processed food and
packaging supplies, dropped precipitously because of the extreme
economic crisis there. Further, Chile?s commercial fishing sub-sector
has been severely affected by climate changes and overexploitation,
reducing production. It is expected that these variables will moderate
in the short to medium term, making the Chilean market for food
processing and packaging a target of opportunity once again.?

"The food processing and packaging industry in Chile is becoming more
concentrated and therefore more competitive. The local manufacture of
food processing and packaging equipment is minimal, but there is a
strong presence of European equipment and machinery, for example,
Denmark and Holland dominate the dairy industry, and Italy, Spain and
Germany the wine industry. This is mostly due to historical legacies
and the 2003 FTA between Chile and the E.U. In 2003, Italy was Chile?s
most important supplier of food processing and packaging machinery
followed by the U.S., Spain, Argentina and Germany."

?The food and beverage processing and packaging industry is in private
hands. Significant investment from multinationals and local economic
groups injects dynamism into this sector, which is an important
component of the national economy. The sector generates approximately
10 percent of GDP and is one of Colombia?s lowest risk sectors.?
?The processing and packaging equipment market has good prospects. The
sector to recession reacted rapidly by reducing profit margins,
focusing on exports, and attracting foreign investors and partners to
strengthen its operations. As a result, the operations of several
international companies in Colombia have been consolidated.?
?During 2001, the overall market grew by 17.6 percent over the
previous year, and it grew about 20 percent during 2002. The United
States maintains its traditional leadership as the sector?s supplier,
but its market share dropped by 8.6 percent in 2001. The industry may
have to refocus on demand, as well as a closer relationship with local
distributors, end users, and their needs. In 2003, the best prospects
will be in the breweries and dairy processing and packaging
equipment.?

Latin America
?In 2002, imports of packaging machinery were down across Latin
America. Even Mexico, which is in the top ten, reported a 4% drop.
Part of this downturn can be explained by the sluggish economies in
the region, which were still feeling the effects of the Argentine
economic crisis. Argentina, reported a 62% drop in its imports,
knocking it from the 27th largest importer of machinery
in 2001 to number 37 in 2002. Brazil also reported a 16% decrease in
its imports in 2002, dropping their total for the year down to $136
million. Chile had a steep drop in imports last year as well, with
their imports dropping 35% to $32 million. Imports of US machinery
were also down, particularly to Mexico and Brazil. US imports to
Mexico fell 14% to $95 million and 25% to $12 million in Brazil.
Notably, the Swiss gained considerable market share in these two
countries, particularly in Mexico where imports from Switzerland were
up 225% to $9 million from the previous $3 million! In Brazil, the
Swiss share rose 39% to $22 million and
Spanish imports were up by 90% to $13 million in Mexico.?

China
?China' s packaging industry is enjoying steady growth, with an annual
growth rate of 18% in 2001 while the industry emerged as the country'
s 15th largest industry - up from a lowly 40th place the previous
decade and a welcome recovery after a sharp slowdown at the end of the
1990s.?
?As China' s packaging industryhas developed, so the country' s
packaging machinery industry has grown. China currently has some 1,600
local packaging machinery manufacturers, 25% of whichare classed by
the government as "large operations? (with more than 1,000employees),
35% "medium-sized?(300-1,000 employees) and 40%
"small-sized?(withfewer than 300 employees). These companies can
produce roughly 2,700 of the4,000 types of packaging machinery
currently manufactured in the global market.
?Bolstered by surging FMCG demand, China' s packaging machinery
industry has helped to fueldevelopment in the packaging industry
