Of all the servers out there - what is the breakdown of operating
systems (windows, linux, unix, etc.) and usage type (database, web,
messaging, file, etc.)? |

I should explain. I've been tasked with finding out the market share
of windows, linux and unix servers. Then I'm to report the breakdown
by O/S of database, web, messaging, file/print servers. I'm not even
sure where to begin looking for these market stats. Any help would be
appreciated!
Of course, I am to report this to the board in 3 days, but I think I can stall. . .

I'm not sure if any site breaks down the data in quite the way
you're seeking, but Netcraft does a good job of breaking it
down by Microsoft, Apache, Sun, etc.:

Let me know what you think. If that does the trick for you,
I'll post a formal answer.

That's good info. I found that Netcraft survey as well. But my concern
is that it only breaks down web servers. No info on file, messaging or
database servers by O/S.
Truly, my board wants to see the info by (1) O/S (2) server type (i.e.
file/print, messaging, database) and then by (3) % of market share,
install base #, and top vendors. But I'll I'd like to present is (1)
and (2).
I did read Info Week's newest issue (Power Surge article) which states
there are 9 millios servers out there, and it's expected to grow 50%
over the next 4 years. Now, if we could just find out how many of
those 9 million run Windows/Linux/Unix, and of each O/S, how many are
file/print, database or web servers?
Thanks for your help!
BTW - I'm an excellent tipper!
