Hi there
As someone who has recently considered a career move to IT in
Australia, I thought I should be the person who answered this one.
The IT industry accounts for around 10% of gross domestic product of
Australia. Small businesses, employing fewer than 20 persons, dominate
the industry with 96% of all IT businesses classified as small. These
businesses account for approximately 24% of employment and 12% of
total income. Research and Development in IT account for $1 380
million expenditure
Australia has a small core of internationally competitive IT
manufacturing and software development firms but Australia is not a
big IT producer. The IT industry exports around $3.3 billion annually
but had a large and growing trade deficit in IT of $15.8 billion in
2000-01 due to the dependence on manufactured imports to meet domestic
demand.
The IT sector is dominated by a few large telecommunications companies
with relatively small manufacturing capacity. 200000+ people are
employed in the core IT industy and around half of these people are IT
professionals. A further 400000 are thought to be employed in
satellite support companies servicing the larger ones.
In addition to purely Australian companies, most of the big
corporations have an Australian presence eg IBM, ORACLE, HP etc all
have offices in the country. Another large source of the IT business,
although not in IT companies directly, is in the Australian Financial
community which is growing rapidly, with its IT infrastructure
expanding very quickly. This means that Financial services companies
are also growing just as rapidly.
There are far too many companies to list here - it would overload the
Google system :)
But you'll find them all, grouped by Software, Hardware and Service
companies at the huge online source for all things IT in Australia at
IT Source - The Source for IT in Australia (

above also has job links to Australian agencies.
