Two wooden water containers are set side by side. The two containers total 54 inches in length. the difference between the length of the containers is six inches. What is the length of the smaller container? |

Mkates, The length of the smaller container is 24 inches. This is how you to do it. We'll call the length of the smaller container X; therfore the length of the longer container would be (X+6). The total length of the two containers is 54 inches. X + (X+6) = 54 2X + 6 = 54 2X = 54 - 6 2X = 48 X = 48/2 X = 24 The length of the smaller container is 24 inches and the length of the other container would be X+6 = 24+6 = 30 inches. Or you can answer it by dividing 54 in 2 = 27 then deduct half the difference 6 by 2 =3 and deduct from 27. you get 24 and 30. Just an alternative way to answer an algebra question. Cheers, www.playing65.com |
