Hello joeslap-ga,
Thank-you for your question.
I have had some experience in setting up port forwarding for several
reasons. One of the best tutorials I have found for this is the
PortForward.com website.
Please take a look at the following webpage which should solve your
port forwarding problems:
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DSL-500G/default.htm
Please let me know by responding to this clarification if this is
helpful for you and I will post it as the answer.

Please remember that if you have a router and a firewall you will need
to forward the ports in both.
There is also some good information here (mainly for the Azureus
bittorrent client but has excellent general advice):

I followed the advice at portforward.com already and it did open my
port to be able to download torrent files, my problem I guess however
is the speed I never get over 10kb/s and usually never even that I am
wanting to know how I can open more ports or, what else I can do to
make this velocity better it is taking forever to download large file
ie more than 1gb

The speed of the download by Bittorrent is dependent on the number of
people sharing the files that you require and the speed at which they
are willing to transfer data to you. It is impossible to tell from
the information you have given whether 10kb/s is a "fast" download
speed for the files you are trying to download or not. For unusual,
brand new or very old bittorrent files it is not unusual to experience
downloads slower than modem download speeds.
This tutorial explains this in more detail the above and some steps as
to how to solve this:

Please let me know if this information is helpful for you. If you
require any further assistance on this subject I will post it as an
answer as I have already devoted a considerable time to solving this
query for you.
