Question ID: 703994
A couple of years ago I made a compilation CD of various funny video
clips. I made some html pages with thumbnails linked to each video.
I packaged the whole thing up using Setup Factory 6 into an
installation CD, sent it out to friends and it worked fine.

I just recently tried to run it again for the first time since
upgrading to XP and I have a strange problem that I assume is being
caused by security settings in XP.

Everything installs fine. When I open up the home page and click on a
particular file - instead of opening up in Media Player I get the
warning "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has
restricted this file from showing active content that could access
your computer. Click here for options"

I click to allow the content and I get another stern warning about
active content, scripts and ActiveX controls. I answer Yes but all I
get is a page with a blank page.

The files in question are .mpeg .avi .mpe .mpg .mp3 .wav .swf

Strangely, .asf and .wmv files work fine.

Any ideas what I need to do to fix this. Either by adjusting my
settings in XP or changes I need to make in the html pages that link
to the files.

Actually I'd prefer to make changes to the html if possible as my
friends are less computer savy than me and wouldn't be comfortable
changing XP setting just to view some funny files.

I can post the current html if that would help. it was all done with FrontPage.

Thanks

Lowered the security settings to low. Still doesn't work.

Checked in Media Player and all formats were already selected.

Went to the advanced tab in IE. Restored defaults. Checked "Allow
active content from CD" Still doesn't work

Checked "Allow active content from files on my PC" (because installing
the CD copies all the files to my PC. Still doesn't work.

BUT... I tried it with a Firefox browser and it works fine, so its
definately something to do with IE

Also, if I go: File, Open and browse to a movie file in IE, it opens
up and plays fine (in media player)

?????????????

Your problem seems more to do with your IE setup than XP...Lower your
security settings in the options panel of IE and give it a try...then
let us know!

Hello gsa80,

try to run the Windows Media player, then choose Tools from the menu,
then goto options. Click on File types Tab, and check .mpeg .avi .mpe
.mpg .mp3 .wav .swf
boxes, click OK.

if its'nt working, try to goto Advanced tab on Internet Options at
Internet Explorer menu. Click on restore defaults, then check Allow
active content from CD... and Allow active contect to run... boxes at
the bottom of Security setting windows in Advanced tab, clik OK.

best,
Adha

You could always try another browser such as firefox, opera, or Avant.

Believe it or not, you'll have much better results if you set that up
as a webpage, or serve it over a local network.

For some reason, Microsoft thought it'd be wise to greatly restict
ActiveX controls on local media, yet permit (sometimes by prompt) the
same controls over the internet or local network. If you have the
means, share that folder of stuff from another PC on the network and
give it go.

Same thing happens with PowerPoint Producer shows exported to CD.

Remember to turn up security settings after testing!!
