Question ID: 704116
I am looking for some tabulated information on mammal bones.
Specifically I want the cross-sectional area (or diameter) and length
of a single weight-bearing bone (such as the femur) across a wide
range of animal sizes (mouse, horse, elephant). My question: where can
I find such information (specific books/journals and page numbers)?

Also: bone density information for the same sets of bones would be helpful.

There is no answer at this time.

Are you just looking for correlations to extrapolate length by width,
or are you hoping to estimate body size or some other characteristics?

This is a fairly well documented field and there is much material
available (although not necessarily directly accessible online):

There is a fairly widely referenced paper here:
Gingerich, P.D 1976. Predictions of body mass in mammalian species
from long bone lengths and diameters. Contributions from the Museum of
Paleontology, University of Michigan, 28: 79-82

Nature has a paper here with a formula for calculating body mass based
on limb length and/or diamter:
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v433/n7022/extref/nature03102-s1.doc

If you can be a bit more specific exactly what you're looking for then
I might be able to pull something together.

Cheers

Mike
