Dear mlb1962-ga; Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. I believe these sources will explain the law sufficiently: ?Under the new law, children under age 8 or weighing less than 80 pounds are required to be in a booster seat, in the rear of the vehicle. Passengers over age 8 and under 18 are required to be in a seat belt anywhere in the vehicle.? NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY http://www.state.nj.us/oag/hts/childseats/childseats_newlaw.html#law ?As of December 1, 2001, New Jersey's child passenger safety law requires: -- Children up to age 8 or 80 pounds must ride in a safety or booster seat in the rear seat of the vehicle. If there is no back seat, the child must sit in the front seat secured by a safety or booster seat. -- Children under age 8 who weigh more than 80 pounds must wear a seat belt anywhere n the vehicle. -- Passengers age 8 to 18 (Regardless of weight) must wear a seat belt anywhere inside the vehicle.? NEW JERSEY CHILD RESTRAIN LAW http://www.co.burlington.nj.us/departments/sheriff/community/njchildrest.html I hope you find that my answer exceeds your expectations. If you have any questions about my research please post a clarification request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us. Best regards; Tutuzdad-ga ? I don't know about the particular motor vehicle code but I know it is extremely dangerous to have children or even small adults in the front if equipped with air bags. |

The latest generation Airbags deal very well with this issue. They vary their deployment strength depending on the speed of the vehicle in the time of the impact and also on the weight of the passenger. |
