In computer technology, system management is a set of functions,
either manual or automated, that provides support services, ensures
reliable operations, promotes efficient use of the system, and ensures
that prescribed service-quality objectives are met. (It is sometimes
also called system administration)
The requirements to be satisfied by systems management activities can
be categorized into five functional areas:
- fault management
- accounting management
- configuration management
- performance management
- security management
Many companies sell software that provides all or some of these

Outside the computer field, the term system management is sometimes
used to describe the management of a discrete set of functions that
comprise a system. For example, an oil rig could be described as a
system, or a chemical plant. In each case, the term System Management
would encompass the set of functions used to provide support of the
overall system. The five functional areas mentioned in the IT system
management function will still apply in non IT cases as well.
