The price is due to the number of questions below. If you don't know
the answer to all, I still encourage you to answer. I will settle for
4/6 good answers, and I tip more with more effort.
I am starting a new on-line business regarding downloadable audio for
churches. My customers would be churches who record their live
worship performances to CD, send them to me, I edit and post them to
an online database (accessible only to the church and its members and
original artists). All of my customers should already be covered by
CCLI licenses http://www.ccli.com/Members/index.cfm.
1. A CCLI license covers a church for making recordings of worship
services, and allows the ability to make CD's and distribute them
among church members. However, it explicitly says you cannot put the
recordings on a web site because a web site "goes far beyond the
boundaries a of a local church." But what about a secure web site
controlled by usernames and passwords? Could that be covered?
2. If the CCLI license cannot cover your own recordings on a
closed-site, then what licensing IS necessary? Is any kind of
compulsory license involved?
3. Must you keep track of downloads for royalties, and should an
artist pay royalties on a download of their own recording (downloading
a recording of themselves)?
4. If there is no charge for a download, how do you calculate a royalty?
5. Do I (as a host/provider) need any sort of licensing to host the
recordings (regardless of what the church may have)?
6. The CCLI license provides that a church can charge $4.00 per CD.
My online site would provide a way to order customized CD's. Can I
charge the visitor $4.00 for the CD on behalf of the church as long as
I bill the church separately for the creation of the CD? |
