What are the relevant laws, rules or regulations concerning
self-prescription in Ontario (presumably as dictated by the Ontario
College of Physicians & Surgeons, but thats just a guess as to who is
in charge)? Self-prescription refers to doctors prescribing medicine
to themselves or their family.

Hi Salgrey

The official guideline under the Canadian Medical Association
Code of Ethics (Update 2004) is

"Responsibilities to the patient
[...]

20. Limit treatment of yourself or members of your
immediate family to minor or emergency services
and only when another physician is not readily
available; there should be no fee for such treatment."

Thanks hardtofind...thats very helpful. The only question left in my
mind is that the CMA Policy starts off by saying "Physicians should
beaware of the legal and regulatory requirements that govern medical
practice in their jurisdictions".

So I wonder if the CMA policy reflects the OMA/Ontario College of
Physicians & Surgeons policy or if the latter could be more specific
than the CMA.

Nonetheless, very good info, cheers.

CPSO guidlines are virtually identical

I doubt there is specific self-prescription legislation. Rather, that
other than these guidelines, the standard rules apply
