I think most people rent a server. When I played unreal tournament, all of the clans, including mine, rented their servers. The major advantage of this is that you have to do much less management. However, setting up your own is merely a matter of having a computer, the game software running in server mode and an internet connection with a static ip address. You will likely have to pay for business-level isp service to be guarenteed a static ip. |

let me clarify this, if you are talking about a peristent world massivley multiplayer game, like World of Warcraft, you can't set up a server. The game is not licensed like this. None of them are. |
