Without any notice, I was recently severed by my employer. While
employed I had comprehensive medical benefits including a Long Term
Disability (LTD) policy. Considering I have Parkinson's Disease,
maintaining a LTD policy is important to me and my family. My
employer is now telling me that the LTD Insurance portion of my benefits is not
convertable and therefor is not offered under Cobra. Isn't this
contrary to what the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of
1986 (COBRA) gaurantees an employee......after a qualifying event
(terminations with no notice) the right to maintain same Group
Coverage for a period of time, often fully at employees expense.

SO.....MY QUESTION:
Doesn't the employer have to offer same LTD coverage (likely to cost
employee up to 102% of group cost per person) for a period of time
after termination ?

leetflower-ga,

A few questions, if I may:

1) Did you receive written notification about your COBRA options and
restrictions? If so, can you tell me a bit more about what specific
written information was provided?

2) Was your long-term coverage a separate policy from your routine
medical benefits? Can you tell what company or companies issued your
policies? (and bear in mind, Google Answers is a public forum,
viewable by anyone).

3) Have you been in touch with any government agencies to check on
your specific situation regarding just what is/isn't covered under
COBRA?

4) I assume your employer had more than 20 employees? Is that correct?

With some additional information, I hope to be able to provide you an
answer on COBRA coverage specific to your situation.

Thanks,

pafalafa-ga
