In the British army, if Major is a higher rank than Lieutenant then why is Lieutenant General a higher rank than Major General? |

They are both due to contractions, Lieutenant Generals were junior to Captain Generals (now contracted to Generals). Major General is a contraction of Sergeant Major General. see http://militarystuff.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/ranks.html |
