In its pharmaceutical form, ketamine is supplied as a clear liquid for
injection. This is the form used by veterinarians. On the streets
ketamine is usually sold as a fine white crystalline powder, which is
obtained from drying the liquid form. The powder form is not
manufactured legally.
As of August 12, 1999, Ketamine was classified as a Schedule III drug.
This means that:
Any person who manufactures, distributes, dispenses, imports or
exports ketamine or who engages in research or conducts instructional
activities or chemical analysis with respect to this substance, or who
proposes to engage in such activities, must be registered to conduct
such activities in accordance with Part 1301 of Title 21 of the Code
of Federal Regulations on and after August 12, 1999. Any person who is
currently lawfully engaged in any of the above activities must submit
an application for registration by August 12, 1999. Any such person
may then continue their lawful activities until the DEA has approved
or denied that application.
It is therefore illegal to possess ketamine without a prescription,
or to supply or produce it without a licence.
Illegal possession of ketamine can carry a sentence of up to two years
in prison and a fine. Supply offences can carry a sentence of up to 14
years in prison and a fine.
Basically, it is illegal to buy or sell ANY form of ketamine unless
you are a doctor, veterinarian, pharmacist or liscensed manufacturer. |
