I'm trying to install a new copy of QuickBooks Pro 2006 on a Windows
Server 2003 machine. Shortly after starting the installation process I
get a red-x error as follows:
Title bar: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library"
Body:
"Runtime error!
Program c:\winnt\system32\msiexec.exe
This program has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual
way. Please contact the application's support team for more
information."
At which point I click OK and then I get the following error:
Title bar: "msiexec.exe - Application Error"
Body:
"The exception unknown software exception (0x40000015) occurred in the
application at location 0x7813461a."
I ran the installation once with the Quickbooks setup log tool, which
logs the installation in some way to a log file. I searched the log
file for errors, and found:
"DEBUG: Error 2826: Control DlgLine on dialog SetupInitialization
extends beyond the boundaries of the dialog to the right by 64 pixels
Internal Error 2826. SetupInitialization, DlgLine, to the right
DEBUG: Error 2826: Control Line1 on dialog SetupInitialization
extends beyond the boundaries of the dialog to the right by 3 pixels
Internal Error 2826. SetupInitialization, Line1, to the right"
Additional information:
This machine is used as a Terminal Server.
Quickbooks Pro 2002 was previously installed and running fine on this machine.
I recently tried upgrading this machine to Server 2003 Service Pack 1,
but because some of my needed database programs failed to work right, I
uninstalled Service Pack 1, apparently successfully, as everything now works fine.
I have removed and re-installed Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1,
apparently successfully.
I am doing all this while logged on as Domain Administrator, which is
a member of the local Administors group.
I have tested the installation on another Windows Server 2003 box, so
the operating system itself is not the problem.
I have tried copying the entire cd to the c: drive and tried
installing from the c: drive but with the same result.
The machine has 1 GB Ram, and runs at about 2 GHZ processor speed.
I spent about an hour with Intuit tech support but didn't make any
progress at all. They finally said the 2826 error was indicative of a
Windows problem, and that they couldn't help me with it.
For some reason the .net version 1.1 framework seems to be implicated
as well. I'm not sure I remember how. At one point I uninstalled the
1.1 framework (from add/remove programs) and I have re-installed it
with marginal success. Meaning that the machine rejects the base
installation, claiming that it's already in place. It accepts the
service pack just fine. But it doesn't show the 1.1 framework in the
add/remove programs list.
My hunches:
- Visual C++ runtime library (since it's mentioned in the first error message)
- Windows Installer (same reason)
- .net Framework 1.1 (I know Quickbooks requires this)
- Security, in general
The result I'm looking for is to find the environmental problem in my
Windows that's preventing Quickbooks from installing. Re-installing
Windows is not an option. |
