Question ID: 705455
I´m creating a webpage, in that websaite I want to add a link to a
file in my computer (Not in Internet). I´ve tried to put the link this
way: <a href="C:/Intranet/fibramax/mario/index.htm"> but when I clic
that link, nothing happens. This link it´s to add a low-cost
"Intranet" on my network.

¿Can this type of link can be added?
¿In Internet Explorer?
¿Will this works on any computer with the file in that specific folder?

If someone interest, the page in fact is
http://mario.fibramax.com/intranet.htm but the page it´s in spanish.
If you answer fast, easy and completely you can receive a tip. Thank
you!

betomario...

Assuming the file is previously downloaded to the users' computers
at the location you're specifying, the link needs to have the
following format:

<a href="file:///C:/Intranet/fibramax/mario/index.htm">

Try it out. If this file exists on your hard drive in that location,
it will open.

Let me know if this solves your dilemma...

Do you want others on the internet to be able to access this file,
others on your own network, or is it just for you?

If others on the internet, you will have to:

1) Have a static IP address.

2) Link to the file via that IP address. If you connect via a router
it gets more complicated by a long chalk.

Might it be better achieving this in a different way - upload the file
to a file sharing service There are lots of these available but I
can't put my hands on the list I had at the moment.

You may not necessarily need a static ip address in this case, you
could try a service like dynamic DNS.

http://www.dyndns.com

As mentioned by murunbuchstansinger, if you're behind a router, that
really complicates things, regardless of static or dynamic ip address.
Probably a good start for that would be looking into what your
router's manual mentions about port forwarding or virtual servers.

Ok, I would like to all the Internet users that have that file in that
specific folder (In their own computers) can reach to the file by
clicking the link. It´s not necesary that the other users to open the
file from my computer, I know that´s hard because I have a router,
Firewall and proxy.

To use a DNS service is not my plan, beacuse that will cost money and
my page is not for business, is personal. I hope the next steps can
guide you for my answer. Thanks:

The example that I want to see working:

1. The "user 1" it´s a friend and I gave a file that will install the
files needed for this section of the webpage to work. That files will
be instaled in his PC.
2. The "user 1" goes online to the "Intranet" section and clic the
"Intranet" link. This link refer the path
"C:\intranet\fibramax\mondragon\index.htm"
3. The page goes offline to display the index.htm file contained in
the pc of the "user 1".
4. If "user 2" it´s a non-autorized person, he will not have the
instalation file that will copy "index.htm" and all the folders. If
"user 2" clics on the linl "Intranet" an error page will be displayed,
or nothing will happen.

Thank you! I will be waiting the answer.
