Often, when I click reply to an email, the original email is "shown"
white on white;  ie, it is there, but it does not show letters in the
big blank space. (Yes, I can highlight it and change it to black, or
any other color.)   Is there some setting I can change to make this
problem disappear.

What email program are you using?

You need to change the reply font color to some color other then white.
Go to Tools, Options, Mail Format, Font, under the "When replying and
forwarding" option click on Choose Font.., select black or blue under
Color then click on OK, OK.

Test it out.
