Question ID: 706150
Configuring Outlook 2003, sp2 (Fully patched from MS website) on a
windows XPsp2 computer to send and receive Gmail.

Outlook client is properly configured as per various on-line Gmail
documents. After going to the gmail account settings-and pressing the
?forwarding and POP? tab, selecting "enable POP for All mail", and
Saving Settings, I then do a 'send and receive all' on my Outlook
client. All the mail is pulled in---and everything is fine.

Upon subsequent attempts to check mail through OL, no mail is pulled
in--no errors or any evidence of problem is shown. No new mail arrives
in the OL inbox, but I have confirmed that there is unread mail in my
gmail inbox. It's as if OL can't pull down the mail.

I then go back to my Gmail settings, I confirm 'Enable POP for all
mail', then I press 'save settings'. Upon launching OL and checking
email again, all mail is pulled in successfully. (((FOR ONE TIME
ONLY!!)))

Subsequent attempts to check mail yield the same problem---no new mail
is pulled in, no error is shown.

It seems like the Gmail settings don't 'stay configured'.

This has been tested on three different computers--OL 2003, OL 2000,
and Outlook Express 6. All three computers show the same problem.

Since you say the "Outlook client is properly configured as per
various on-line Gmail documents", I assume you've been through
this page for Outlook 2003 many times:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13278

I wonder if, in step 6, you tried the "Test Account Settings"
button. I also wonder if, on the same page of the dialog box,
you've tried checking "Log on using Secure Password Authentication
(SPA)", even though they don't tell you to do that.

Finally, I wonder if you're behind a firewall, and need to
configure access for the ports specified in step 9. If you
have a hardware firewall (router), you should be able to do
so in a browser window, using the router's address. Usually,
it's http://192.168.123.254/

Let me know where this takes you...

We did follow the Web instructions
We did 'test settings': emails to arrived in Gmail, but not in OL
We did try your suggested port configuration...on two computers, but
that did not solve problem

Hi dan711,

How long has it been? GMail often takes a day or two before it starts
forwarding mail, also, it may come in batches at first.

Are you only able to receive some of your mail?
"After you first enable POP in your Gmail account, your messages
become available in batches as our servers communicate with your mail
client. It may take some time for all of your mail to download if you
have lots of messages."
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13341&bug=1&query=pop+download&ctx=bugflow

If that doesn't seem to be what's happening, you could try this:

In IE
Go to Tools / Internet Options / Content Tab
Press "Clear SSL State" button

Will look forward to your reply,
hummer

Thanks sublime1 and thanks hummer,
Your suggestions focused us on our error: my tests involved sending
messages to my Gmail account from my POP client...a 'no-no' we had
begun to suspect and, thanks to hummer-ga, was highlighted in the HELP
page he sites. Query answered! Problem solved!

Only one researcher can post a formal answer on any one question.
From your last Clarification, it sounds like hummer-ga was of more
assistance to you than I was, in which case you can request that
she answer this question.

If you want to reward both of us, here's a method for paying two
researchers:

You reduce the price on the current question, and specify which
researcher should repost their input at the new price, and then
you can post another question for the other researcher, putting
'For username-ga' in the title, in order to pay them the amount
you set for that question.

You can change the price of this question by going to "My Account,"
selecting "My Unanswered Questions", clicking on the question, and
then clicking on "Change Question Parameters" to modify the pricing.)

If you would like any additional information just let me know by
posting a Request for Clarification, and I'll be happy to assist you
further.
