My understanding is that Indonesia tried to settle the place with Javanese

- the locals objected and used spears

Sounds like you're blaming the Timorese.  The Indonesians were the agressors.

Well, Indonesia annexed East Timor when the Portuguese moved out.
That may, or may not be reasonable.

It is not entirely clear who started the 'aggression', but like the
current problems in Darfour, things are not as clear as they look on
the surface.

As usual, with East Timor, oil was involved, otherwise the West would
not have given a toss.

Not an opinion, just a statement of what I see as the facts.

Yes.  What with the Indonesians being oppressive, murderous torturers
and the Timorese being defenseless, it is very difficult to figure out
who the bad guy is.

Normally things start off with a small number of murderous brutes on both sides.

I call those the 'kindling'.

Then you get 'retalliation' - that is when the fire gets a life of its own.
