Hi Bryan,

Thank you for accepting my comment as the answer to your question.
Here it is again:

Why Stanley
"The original town team, Accrington FC were amongst the twelve founder
members of the Football League in 1888, before resigning from the
league after just five years. An existing team already existed at that
time called Stanley Villa, named as such because they were based at
the Stanley Arms on Stanley Street in the town. With the demise of
Accrington FC, Stanley Villa took the town name to become Accrington
Stanley, and existed in the lower divisions of the Football League
until 1962, when the club famously resigned from the League midway
through the season due to financial difficulties..."

"...But a lack of success on the field led to crippling debts that
eventually caused the club to fold in 1894. Its place was taken by a
strong team of local players originally named Stanley Villa, mainly
because it played on a ground near the top of Stanley Street. In 1893,
however, it had changed its name to the immortal Accrington Stanley."

THE BEGINNING - 1891-1916
"The formation details of Accrington Stanley are sketchy, but it is
believed that the club was formed as Stanley Villa in 1891, so named
because the originators lived on Stanley Street, or if you prefer,
because the club was formed at the old Stanley Arms. The club took the
name of the Town in 1893."

Just for fun, here's the famous commercial that made Accrington
Stanley a household name.

Boy 1: "Do you want a drink?"
Boy 2: "Got any lemonade?"
Boy 1: "If you want!" (he takes a bottle of milk from the fridge)
Boy 2: "Milk.....Ugh!"
Boy 1: "It's what Ian Rush drinks."
Boy 2: "Ian Rush?"
Boy 1: "Yeah, an' he says if I don't drink lots of milk, when I grow
up I'm only gonna be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley!"
Boy 2: "Accrington Stanley? ... Who are they??!"
Boy 1: "Exactly!"
Boy 2: "Gimmie some!
Boy 1: "Gerroff!"

Hi, Again, Rainbow

Please advise your husband that Newcastle have just lost 2-0 to Man Utd.

He really should support a better club.

Maybe, he should ask GA for some advice?

Hi Bryan,

Since, as you say probably NOBODY really knows the reason the name
Stanley is used, I'm posting this as a comment for you to decide
whether this suffices as the answer to your question.
