I need a good dose of caffeine daily in order to keep alert, but caffeine doesn't seem to be good for my stomach. What would be the best and more stomach-friendly alternatives to caffeine? I would want the answer to include some links to relatively credible sources that document the effects of those alternatives. | |

This website has some healthy alternatives to caffeine that will help to give you more energy. Some of them are high protein foods and foods with carbohydrates, also energy bars. http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/news/articles.asp?ID=33647 |

(Go to a doctor, fake ADD, and get an unlimited refillable prescription for Desoxyn, which is essentially legal meth...) Ignore the stupid Desoxyn comment. Why do you need caffeine to stay awake? That's the real problem, not what drugs do you need to fake alertness. |

I agree with above. Drugs are the wrong answer *and yes, Caffeine is a drug, a socially accepted drug, but a drug none the less. When you caffeinate yourself you are actually becoming progressively more dependent. Your body naturally produces less of the neurotransmitters that caffeine immitates as a result of, what it perceives, as super saturation. Any artificial means to change the chemical balance in your brain will be resisted by your body, and you will inevitably end up in the same situation: you need more everytime for the same effects, and you suffer the draw backs of dependence: ulcers etc. Work out more and get into better cardiovascular shape and your body will become better at utilizing energy on its own. |

My doctor (who practices and teaches at one of the top medical schools in the US) recommended that I try taking ginseng to improve my energy level. I did find that it helped me feel more energetic and alert, and it's natural and non-habit-forming. It's available in many drug stores under the brand name Ginsana, which was the one my doctor told me to buy. |

Ephedrine would probably keep you awake. But I support the idea of addressing the problem of why you're tired in the first place. Caffeine's a bandaid. |

Any upper will bother your stomach. I buy ranitidine acid reducer cheap at WalMart. One tablet lasts 12 hours. Walking meditation is a good alternative to coffee. |
