I am looking for a font to use in typing text for children that
includes the long and short vowel markings - a long line above the
vowel for long vowels (macron)
or a curved line opening upwards above the vowel to indicate short vowels (breve)
I can't find these marked vowels anywhere!! I am wondering what font
teachers or publishers of books teaching phonics use to get these?

Hmm. I learned to read partially by watching The Electric Company.
They got along just fine without this silly convention. I think the
marks could just very well confuse the kids.

It's not a special font. In your word processing program go to Tools
> Insert > Symbol and select the one you want...
