Dear Maus,

I have the answer to only 2 of the questions:
- "24 Millionen Deutsche spielen Skat Über 500.000 Spieler pflegen
wöchentlich das Spiel, über 50.000 aktive Mitglieder im DSKV
(Deutscher Skatverband e.V.)."
(SOURCE: Berlin-Brandenburg Skat Journal, June 2005,

However, I failed to find out how many play online and what is the
turnover made through skat cash-contests.

Dear Raus,

I am sorry, I haven't been notified that you replied. According to the
German Skat Association, 24 million Germans play the game; with
half-a-million playing it weekly; and there are 50,000 members of the
association.

"24 Millionen Deutsche spielen Skat Über 500.000 Spieler pflegen
wöchentlich das Spiel, über 50.000 aktive Mitglieder im DSKV
(Deutscher Skatverband e.V.)."

By the way, a book from 1987 claims that "over 12 million Germans play
skat" (not mentioning the source of this figure:
"Das große Buch vom Skat"
<http://www.skatspezies.de/lit/poetsch.htm>). Either that the
Unification has done wonders to Skat, or that it became really
popular.

The Unification is important here - because apparently, in the Neue
Bundeslaender, most people play with "German Decks" (Deutsche Blatt),
while in the "Old" Bundeslaender, most people play with the French
Decks. Today, 85% of the players use the French one, but German
colours have been applied:

There is also an article that might be interesting (it is off-line):

Skatspieler wieder gemeinsam. Cartophilia Helv. 2/1991

Information on (regular) competitions could be found at the Skat
Association's webpage:

Skat Online
===========

The "DOSKV - Deutscher Online Skatverband e.V." (German Skat
Association) was founded in 2004. The "off line" Skat Association
claims on their website that there are 100,000 members registered for
the online games:
"Über 28 Millionen gespielte Spiele jährlich Über 100.000 registrierte Spieler"
<http://www.skat-online.com/>

It has organised since online competitions and there is also an Online
Skat Bundesliga:
