I'd like someone to do a thorough literature search on robotic convoy
research. This is research in mobile robotics which has been going on
since the 1980's in a number of civilian and military (US and foreign)
labs. Relevant search terms might include variations on: "robotic
convoys", "robotic followers", "autonomous convoys", etc... A
follow-up of the references found in topical papers may yield further
terms and sources. I am not interested in general robotics or driving
research, nor am I interested in "cooperating robots" if they are not
used in a convoy. Research on sensors or other technologies to be
used in convoys IS interesting.
I'm interested in everything written in English on this subject.
Ideally, the researcher would be able to send me PDFs of several
hundred relevant research papers, journal and conference articles. I
would expect that the material would be at least superficially checked
to weed out off-topic search hits. This sounds daunting, but I think
you will find that the volume of research is actually fairly
manageable.
Once this is done, I will probably post a second question asking for
this research to be summarized...
Please let me know if you have questions.
Thanks!

stormforge-ga,
From a preliminary look into this subject, it seems that there are
only a handful of documents available online that go into any depth on
this topic.
And by 'handful', I mean, literally, single digit numbers, rather than hundreds.
Of course, there may be many more documents in the printed literature,
and it's possible I can dig out their citations, but as far as online
materials, I am not encouraged by my initial research that there is
very much available.
Any suggestions...?

I'm surprised there's not more available publicly online. I guess I
may have to resort to journals and conference proceedings which will
require the resources of a research library. Are there Google Answers
researchers who have access to online journal services and search
services (INSPEC, IEEE, etc...)?
If not, whatever can be found online may still be useful -- just not
as much help as I had hoped. In the absense of a research library,
perhaps the online search could be expanded to include news articles,
powerpoint presentations, web sites, etc...?

sf-ga,
I have access to a number of in-depth research services, including
some that are specific to the military.
However, it would be a violation of copyright to reproduce articles
found through these searches. Best I could do would be to provide
citations for relevant articles.
Let me know how (or whether) I should proceed.
paf
P.S. Here's one of the online sources I found...it would be helpful if
you could verify that this is, in fact, the sort of thing you're
after:

Yes -- the FCS robotic follower stuff is interesting and on the right track.
The library where I work has access to all the major online reference
tools, databases, journals, etc... I'm just too swamped to use them!
Hmmm... Maybe at this point the most useful thing you can do would be to
provide me with as comprehensive a search as you can without violating
copyright.
I'm travelling tomorrow, but I'll check back in the evening.
Thanks!

Bill,
Here are the references I've found. I'm not posting these as an
answer, since you asked for hundreds of articles, and this is
certainly a much smaller list.
Still, let me know what you think of the list, below, and what more
you would need to make for a complete answer to your question.
Cheers,

Great! That's good stuff. I think there's a lot of value in it for
me if you can simply complete a thorough internet-only search on
convoys. Do you think the list you've posted so far is comprehensive,
or is there more out there to dig up?
Thanks!

Bill,
Thanks a lot for your note.
Most of the stuff that I didn't include on the above list was either
(a) quite old, dating back to the mid-1990s or earlier, or (b) just a
repeat of information already provided (e.g. there were about 10 newsy
articles on the Stryker convoys, all from the same original military
press release.
I didn't want to clutter the list with old or duplicative materials.
But if you want these for the sake of comprehensiveness, just let me
know, and I'll be glad to include them.
Meanwhile, I'll continue looking for any more recent materials that I
may have missed, and I'll be sure to include them in my formal answer.
Let me know your thoughts at this point...

Thanks! Yeah -- I don't need repeats (just the more
complete/authoritative version) and I don't particularly need stuff
before 1995 unless it's particularly good, interesting, or
comprehensive.
Please continue the internet survey until you feel like we've captured
90% of what's out there.
Cheers,
