Hello aluivera-ga,

Thank-you for your question.

Let me take the second of these two URL's first.

HongKong.com has this to say about Mentari Electronik:
"Mentari Elektronik was established in 2002. Our Company is an
INDONESIA based technology solution provider delivering electronic
products. Our primary focus are in Digital Mp3 Player such as Apple
Ipod, televisions, camera, printers & monitors, laptops and
peripherals. We have since grown and are now stocking 90% of our
inventories. In year 2000 we have expanded our branch warehousing
facility in Surabaya Indonesia Bonded zone, to facilitate testing &
sorting out working & non working units. Our goal is to ensure buyers
are confident and receive the best products."
http://sme.hongkong.com/company/companyInfo.php?memberid=mentari06

On mentarielektronik.com they give their contact details as:
"Jln Mankubumi No. 27, Medan-Sumatera Utara, Indonesia"
http://mentarielektronik.com/file/contactus.htm

This is the same as that given on hongkong.com. It also correlates
with the details given when they registered their domain name:

http://whois.mtgsy.net/?ff=http://mentarielektronik.com/file/contactus.htm

The domain name whois search states that the domain was only recently
registered (29 December 2005) but the information given above states
that the company was established in 2002. It may be that the company
has only recently set up a website (but being a company that trades in
electronics I would have thought setting up a website of some sort
would be a priority in these times).

Searching for the company domain name on Google only brings up 4
results. I would prefer to see many more results.

Searching for "Mentari Elektronik" gives 99 results, the majority of
which appear to come from wholesale directories. I would like to see
people praising the site or at least stating they have bought from
them. Every link appears to be to one of their products.

Similarly, their website has had 87 hits since it went online. I
would prefer to see many more hits.

Their website terms and conditions also appear to suggest they will
only accept cash, bank transfers or checks. You have no means of
insurance or recourse if you pay by any of these methods.

For this final reason alone I would be extremely cautious about
dealing with the company.

Now, q-electronic.com. A quick whois search for the domain name
provides you with who registered the domain name and when.

"Domain Name.......... q-electronic.com
Creation Date........ 2006-03-03
Registration Date.... 2006-03-03
Expiry Date.......... 2007-03-03
Organisation Name.... letitia vassell
Organisation Address. Jl. HM. Thamrin #130
Organisation Address.
Organisation Address. Medan
Organisation Address. 20157
Organisation Address. Sumatera Utara
Organisation Address. INDONESIA

Admin Name........... Alex Martin
Admin Address........ Jl. HM. Thamrin #130
Admin Address........
Admin Address........ Medan
Admin Address........ 20157
Admin Address........ Sumatera Utara
Admin Address........ INDONESIA
Admin Email.......... q_electronic2006@yahoo.com
Admin Phone.......... +62.6177581886"
http://whois.mtgsy.net/?ff=http://www.q-electronic.com/

The contact details appear to be the same as those given on their
website but once again my alarm bell is ringing when I see that the
domain name was only registered 11 days ago and the domain is only
registered for one year.

I would suggest a legitimate company would register their domain name
for longer than one year.

If I was to do any business with a wholesale company I would like to
see evidence (other than statements on their website) that they have
been in business for longer than 11 days.

Nobody links to q-electronic.com according to a Google search.

Although by no means a test of their legitimacy, both websites appear
to be very amateurish in nature. I would prefer any company I dealt
with to have more professionally looking websites. Q-electronics.com
website appears to be one from a generic shop software and
mentarielektronik.com looks homemade (the sort of thing I could knock
up in 10 minutes!). If the companies were expecting multi-million (or
even multi-thousand) dollar sales surely they would have hired a
better website designer?

I would also note here that the Q-electronics.com website has only had
192 hits since it went online. This appears very low and suggests
that no-one else uses their site... why would this be?!

Searches on the legitimacy of the telephone numbers and addresses of
each site have so far brought up nothing firm that can be verified (if
I find anything after I post this I will add the information).

Finally after looking at the prices of the items on offer, these
appear to be low even for wholesale goods. Before buying anything on
the internet I always think "is the deal too good to be true" and in
this case I believe it is.

My recommendation would be to use extreme caution when buying from
either of these companies (personally I would not trade with either).
Neither of the companies has provided me with a quality of experience
I would expect for a wholesale retailer and neither give off the aroma
of being legitimate companies.

If you require any further assistance on this subject please do not
hesitate to ask for clarification.

Thank-you for your 5-star rating, kind comments and very generous tip!
 They are all appreciated.

Unfortunately it is not possible for me to publish the details
discovered here to all the trade websites but the answer will stay
online at Google Answers. This means that anyone investigating these
companies will find this thread and be warned off the two websites.

Thank-you once again for your business and I hope you will continue to
use Google Answers.

The testimonials on http://www.q-electronic.com/
are a blatant copy of http://www.chinavasion.com/
They have not even bothered to change the text of the second
testimonial of "Dear CV Team".

I can only get this through Google cache at the moment. I have not
checked the bona fides of chinavision.

Answerfinder - you beat me to it - I was just trying to find more
about chinavasion. If you look at the source code for each page at:
Q-electronics.com you will see and HTML comment:
"<!-- saved from url=(0049)http://www.chinavasion.com/index.php?currency=EUR -->"
It looks like they just copied (scraped) another site.

Another piece from the source code is what is called key terms which
is used by search engines: They didn't bother to update these either
(note they refer to china not indonesia):

"content="China Wholesale Products. Electronics, computer accessories,
digital cameras, MP3 players, Notebooks, Car DVD Player and gadgets
from China. Shipping worldwide."

May I just add that I consider that Hongkong.com is not a reliable
source. Anyone can become a member and they prepare their own
description of their company.

The company does not appear on the list of Indonesia companies at the
Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia. It also does not
appear on the National Agency for Export Development?s list of
exporting companies. Strange, given that they describe themselves as
an exporter.

Take a sample from their About Us page and see how the text is not
exactly original.

The text "was established in 2002. Our Company is an INDONESIA based
technology" appears on several other so called companies.

"Focus: Asset recovery, liquidation, export, computer recycling,"

answerfinder-ga, I agree with your conclusions that hongkong.com is
not a reliable source. I was attempting to provide an argument that
showed the company may not be telling the truth. The fact that the
company states that they were established in 2002 is solely their word
and I can find no evidence that agrees with this (only facts that
appear to contradict this).

Thank-you both for collaborating with me on this answer and agreeing
that both of these companies are suspicious.

palitoy. Thanks. I just can't resist these type of questions because
of my previous career as a police officer. Didn't mean to sound if I
was critical.

It didn't sound critical at all, in fact you were simply adding parts
to the puzzle that I had missed. It was great to see the evidence of
what I suspected (and indicated) to be a generic website to turn out
to be fact. (I should've thought of googling those testimonials!) I
wanted to post what evidence I had immediately so that the customer
did not do anything too hasty and actually do business with either of
the companies.

I am still investigating the addresses and telephone numbers given in
the whois information and I expect they will turn out to be used in
multiple domain registrations or be fraudulent.

One could also question why the photos on mentarielektronik are
amateur snapshots: the camera and ipod hand-held; the computer, used
equipment; that not all photo pages have a "one-page-back" arrow. It
looks like they padded out the site with whatever they could find,
hardly in line with the volume of business suggested.
Subject: Re: I need to know this website scam or not ?
From: indistinguishable-ga on 15 Mar 2006 06:57 PST

Note how mentarielektronik has this at the bottom of every page:
"DUE TO MANY FRAUD , WE NO LONGER ACCEPT OTHER FORMS OF PAYMENT
BESIDE T.T IN ADVANCE"
I wonder why; it wouldn't be because it would be virtually impossible
to get a refund when using telegraphic transfer?

Also note this inconsistency on the "About us" page:
"History: Mentari Elektronik was established in 2002. (...) In year
2000 we have expanded our branch warehousing facility in Surabaya
Indonesia Bonded zone, to facilitate testing & sorting out working &
non working units. Our goal is to ensure buyers are confident and
receive the best products for their money"

Notice how that's exactly the same as the website of another 'company'
(I use the term lightly) in this GA question:
