An IMDB (user submitted) biography states that "a depression had
started to eat away at him. He died on April 18, 1992." However;
Wikipedia, the Biography Channel's online report, starpulse.com, and
Answers.com all fail to mention anything along these lines, so it is
probably just a rumor.

He was extremely introverted, however, and died of a heart attack
shortly after another similar comedian (Frankie Howerd) died. These
two factors could easily be turned into a rumor of depression.
