Hello, I'm very frustrated and have been searching the web for days. If anyone takes pity on me and answers, I need very specific directions. I purchased ebookwriter gold software, and have produced several self-extracting ebooks. I was trying to sell them using EJunkie. (Ejunkie sends a download link to the customer after they pay via paypal) I was sort-of liking the Ejunkie service, but the customers could not follow directions. They were told to check their paypal email account for their download, but many times they wouldn't read the auction instructions. Their download would arrive in their Paypal email address, but they were looking at their Ebay address, so they couldn't find it. Then, they send questions. Time-consuming questions. Now, ebay has a new thing they call "Digital Delivery" - to participate, you must give them a URL address for the customer to immediately download the product after they pay immediately. This seems as though it would save some time, as the customer downloads the product immediately. Hopefully less customers would have to email? I attempted to get URL addresses from EJunkie, and they refused, they only have secured download addresses. All links to download products expire, so I couldn't provide ebay with an address to download the product. I uploaded an ebook to some storage space that I have with my ISP, but they will not give me a download address, They don't allow it. SO, What I need to do is create a website, and somehow upload the files in a manner that each file will have it's own url address. I assume that this involves each file having it's own web page, (That's the way the Ejunkie downloads look) I have a babycroc account with Hostgator, and it appears to have many options, FTP uploading, unlimited subdomains, file manager, frontpage extensions, perl, and lots more, but I don't know how to start with them. I downloaded a free FTP, but it is too hard to use. I have asked for help before, and people act like it's self-explanitory, but it isn't. I tried to upload files, they must not have been compatible. I have Microsoft Office Word 2003 expired trial on my computer, I could pay the $150 to restart it, if that would help. Or, I could purchase a HTML editor or FrontPage, but, I still don't know if I would be able to upload whatever I create to the web. I tried to work on a web page with wordpad, but I couldn't figure out how to view it in progress and see how it was going to look. I want to make several websites, from scratch. I understand HTML, and want to use it.... Tables, font face & sizes, links, placing images, the non-breaking space, background colors, I know that marquee is discouraged, I also know how to place paypal pay buttons and shopping cart on a site. etc, etc. HOWEVER, I don't understand how you get your designed web page uploaded to the web. So, I need help determining what I should make the webpage with, and how to get it uploaded, and then how to upload files that will have their own URL address for download. I would like to host some non-protected URL files to sell really cheap ebooks, with no customer-contact,with ebay's new "Digital Delivery". I can continue to use EJunkie for files that I want to protect a little more... I am even willing to pay a website service, for example: Homestead, to host the website, but I don't know if I would be able to upload files into an area with their own URL address. I also need this information, because I need to make several un-related websites. One for a business that I have on ebay, one for a brick and mortar business, and one for a new consulting business, so I would prefer to know how to do everything for the website myself. I am so frustrated, because I have read MUTIPLE pages claiming that they have EVERYTHING you need to know about making your own web page, but none of them mention how to upload it, or what programs to buy to upload it, and NOWHERE near to anything about how to sell downloads from it. They go on about links, and keywords, and advertising, etc. etc. Someone PLEASE help me, is this the best kept secret on the web? Do I have to go to computer school to find out? Thanks for your time. |

while I could help you with the huge task of the code you require and hosting, maintaining it etc I would suggest you consider http://www.local-shop.net They could host your shop and supply you with all the technical requirements you need for only £10 a month. however I can try and give you pointers on writing the complex php and xhtml you would require otherwise. |

You need three things for your project. 1. A host. There are many free ones but you would be better to use one that charges a small amount. Many of the free ones do not allow file storage/downloads because of the potential bandwidth problem. 2. An HTML editor. 3. FTP software. Coffee Cup software has some fantastic free downloads that fullfill nos. 2 & 3. They are at http://www.coffeecup.com/freestuff/ If you can use Windows Explorer, you can use FTP software. Basically you see your computer with your file structure on the left side and your host account with file structure on the right. To upload one of your ebooks you simply select the ebook file, select the location (for example,'myebooks'folder) on your host's server and press the upload button. The URL that ebay is looking for would then be: http://www.yoursite.com/myebooks/myebook.pdf (or whatever file format you are using) Check out this site for FTP instructions: http://www.ftpplanet.com/ftpresources/basics.htm Leave any comments/questions |

Dear daemon_byte, Thank you for adding a comment on my question. I had not received notice of an answer, so I havn't been checking on the question. I even logged in to attempt to cancel the question, but it wasn't possible. As per your comments, I went to the site that you recommended: local-shop.net I would have to NOT recommend the site, based on information available by visiting. For starters: What I consider false advertising, the two packages listed at £10 MONTHLY... when you read the fine print, it isn't monthly, but a year-long contract for £120 w/just monthly installment payments. I am in the USA, so that would involve me giving this company permission to charge my Visa card $209 dollars over the next year without even a small trial period? daemon_byte, there is NO way that I will sign a yearly contract to any company site-unseen. MANY internet advice sites strongly advise against any YEARLY contracts, and also warn that when this is the only option that can be an indication of a potential shady company. Another GLARING problem with the site, is that NONE of the packages have a clear description of what is provided. Many of the descriptions mention functions that are available to PURCHASE, for an unspecified amount, along with the additional cost of the packages. From a quick look at the other options, it seems as though this company charges extra for every little thing. Blogs - Annual £50.00 ChatRoom- Annual £50.00 Forum -Annual £50.00 Online polls Annual £50.00 Support Tools?? Annual £50.00 Wiki Annual £50.00 Each one of these things is $85 American Yearly???? Here is the main description of the $209 dollar web shop package: "With this subscription you will have a totally configured website. Your exact needs will be tailored for. This subscription will allow you to expand your business into an already growing market easily with no hassle" Do you see that terrible description? No mention of bandwidth limits. No mention of storage space. No mention of domains and subdomains or email accounts, just to mention a few things. No mention of what payment methods that your store customer can use. The only thing that appears clear is that they will design the web site for you. Nothing else is exactly specified. And, I'm sorry to have to say this, but if THEIR site is anything to go by, a site designed by this company would not be very appealing or customer friendly. The site is unattractive. And, I do believe that it states somewhere that you can get a few changes done to your site. Well, I do multiple changes in my ebay store every other day, so that would be completely unacceptable. Also, this site does not offer links to any example sites that they have designed. The site is very poorly arranged, with several of the web pages with viewable html code showing: FOOTER_TEXT_BODY listed at the bottom of several of their pages. Also with this statement: "2952 requests since Saturday 24 September, 2005" showing that something hasn't been updated since last September????? Like I already stated in my question, I have a web-hosting account with HostGator, which only costs $10 American per month, an actual REAL monthly option, I can cancel anytime that I want. This account INCLUDES all of that stuff, chat pools, support, unlimited web pages, etc. etc. unlimited domains and subdomains, unlimited email accounts, just to name a few things. The only thing that they don't do is design your web site. I assume you must have some financial interest in the site. daemon_byte, if this is your business, I really suggest that you update your site with better descriptions, and a more user-friendly format, more attractive lay-out, etc if you want to stay in business. So, thanks for trying to sell me something for $209 plus, but as I said that I wanted to design several unrelated sites for myself, I just went ahead and ordered my own copy of Front Page, as I have read that Front page takes care of uploading the web site without any other programs necessary. |

Dear Sopher, Thanks for responding to my question. You mention that I need to get a host, as I had already written in my question above: "I have a babycroc account with Hostgator, and it appears to have many options, FTP uploading, unlimited subdomains, file manager, frontpage extensions, perl, and lots more, but I don't know how to start with them." I signed up with HOSTGATOR and then was unable to get to the web site posting stage. Hostgator let me download a free FTP program. So, I didn't have number two on your list, an html editor. I was previously told that NOTEPAD and WORDPAD, which come free on your computer, would work as html editors. I started to design a page with WORDPAD, but there wasn't an option to view the way the code would display online. So, I have ordered Front page. It hasn't arrived as yet. So, thanks Sopher for trying to help. |
