I need to know how Windows XP saves saves the layout of the icons on
the desktop. What I need to do is to save the exact layout of the
desktop icons and be able to transfer this layout to a different
computer. For this to work I need to know how Windows XP stores this
information so I can copy it from one machine to another.

Let me know if this explanation from a cache of the Chris-tech website helps.

I like the explanation that was provided, but I am wondering if there
is a way to do the same thing as in the explanation but without the
use of that small program that adds the two options (save/restore) to
the menu.

Thank you

I wasn't able to locate a method without using an additional program.

A better way might be to use the User State Migration Tool (USMT)
provided by Microsoft. It copies all the personal settings of a user
and transfers them to the target PC. Here is the link to download it.
