If I know that someone has been convicted of violating a federal law,
is there some place on the Internet I can go and read the details?

Quite possibly. But the problem is, there isn't just a single
place...there are many different sources, for the many different parts
of the federal justice system.

If you can tell us more about the particular crime, or even the name
and state of the convicted person, we might be able to pin things down
more concretely.

Also, if the person went to a Federal Prison after 1982, there's a
record of it here:

Locate a Federal Inmate (includes all inmates from 1982 to present)
http://www.bop.gov/iloc2/LocateInmate.jsp

Let me know if this helps..

From time-to-time I read that someone was convicted of violating a
federal law. When I try to research it, I often find a record of the
original arrest/indictment on the web site of the District Attorney.
But I rarely find a record of a conviction.

Though it wasn't in the scope of the original question, I would also
be interested in how to find out if the arrest/indictment was dropped,
plea bargained down, or the individual found to be non guilty.
