Question ID: 707992
I have 5000 large txt files I'm trying to automatically format and put
on a webpage. Are there programs that can help me do this? Please read
the specs carefully:

<<< About the txt files: >>>

- Each is an ebook that is now in the public domain
- No pagination. Each txt file is one continuous book with some
headers, paragraphs, but no page data from the original print version.
- There is a big header text block, which I will have to edit and/or
cut and paste elsewhere.

 <<< About the website: >>>

- Only the equivalant of the first 20 pages of each book should be
included on the website. (word count and paragraph/header positions
should be used in dividing the continous text file into seperate
pages.)
- Google AdWords script should be inserted in 2 locations on each page.
- A user-friendly navigation system should be automatically generated for each
ebook. Very much like this ebook: http://www.psychologicalselfhelp.org/
- A parent menu system for accessing the 5000 ebooks is also needed

 <<< The Workflow: >>>

I can put all the 5000 text files into one folder. I then want to just
point the script/batch processor/program to this folder and it should
create the html pages for me.

Ofcourse, I can repeat this process a few times if different scripts
are doing the job... but not 5000 times!

<<< FYI: Click2Convert has already been suggested but I don't think
it can do everything, namely dividing the single document into pages
(based on headers, paragraphs, word counts, etc.), and inserting the
google AdWords script >>>

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check this out:

AscToHTM
http://www.jafsoft.com/asctohtm/
..."AscToHTM is a tool that lets you automatically convert your text
to HTML web pages, allowing you to quickly post newsletters, tables
and other documents online.....The Windows version supports wildcards,
but registered users can also get a console version that can be run
from the command line and is better suited to batch conversions. An
API version may interest software developers who want to incorporate
AscToHTM's ability to create web pages into their own applications..."

Does this help?

I can think of no program that would do what you want. However i have
a freeware program I can send called A.F.9 Replace some bytes 1.2 that
searches for specific strings of chars and replaces them with another.
how is the text file set up? I mean is there any tags or such that
could be used by a program for formatting?

What you're really looking for is a "Content Management System". I
have built such things before, but they generally require somebody
technically skilled to setup and configure them.

A good example is a website I have been helping with recently -
www.frolikcartoons.com - where the owner had a LOT of scanned images
that they wanted to put into a website. The solution is custom built
using a database behind the scenes.

In my exeprience, to do anything with bulk documents and/or files,
you're really looking at something involving a database and
programming.

We had to do something kinda similar with 1 million (yes 1 million!)
text files. Each text file had to be renamed depending on the type of
content. So one had to scan through the text file, find out what it
should be called and then rename it. Finally, a line had to be added
at the end of each text file. I created a VB .NET program to do this
for us, (lots of IF statements :) ) since I couldn't find a program
already created. This sounds like a custom job, where you could create
a script that meets all your needs and there are a variety of
programming languages that could do it for you.
