Dear Johnnie,

It’s been quite a challenging search that took me several days. At one
point, I came to believe that no information would be available to
just post a link that would address you there, since all the leads
took me either to fee based information services or, when free, the
specific data would be included within a too much broader category.
This was the case of the US Census Bureau, where the specific
information you looked for was difficult to find by just surfing their
website, so I called one of the telephone numbers available at one of
their pages, called M3 Home (
http://www.census.gov/indicator/www/m3/index.html ) where they
redirected me to someone in the office who very kindly indicated me a
precise document reference, where I could find at least part of the
information required. The document is a PDF file named “Polish and
Other Sanitation Goods Manufacturing”, available at
http://www.census.gov/prod/ec97/97m3256b.pdf . You can use the PDF
reader search feature for the words “upholstery” or “automobile” –by
turns- or else go to table 6a., page 10, and look for the item “Rug
and upholstery cleaners, consumer ~ type preparations”, and at page
11, “Rug and upholstery cleaners, industrial ~ and institutional ~
type preparations”, “Automobile body polish and cleaners, household”,
and “Automobile body polish and cleaners, industrial and
institutional”. If you want to access this document starting from US
Census Bureau website home page ( www.census.gov ), just follow this
steps:
1.- Click M from the search column on the left.
2.- Click Manufacturing Statistics.
3.- At the selector by the title Economic Census, select the category
Economic Census – Manufacturing Sector.
4.- Click Industry Series.
5.- Scroll down to find EC97M-3256B and click it.

Something useful for this and further searches is to know the product
NAICS code (North American Industry Classification System) and
category:

General NAICS category: 325612; “Polishes and sanitation goods”

NAICS category: 3256124; “Specialty cleaning and sanitation products”
Product type: “Rug and upholstery cleaners, consumer ~ type
preparations”
NAICS code: 32561244E1
Product type: “Rug and upholstery cleaners, industrial ~ and
institutional ~ type preparations”
NAICS code: 32561244F1

NAICS category: 3256127; “Polishing preparations and related products
(including automobile, floor, and metal polishes)”
Product type: “Automobile body polish and cleaners, household”
NAICS code: 3256127111
Product type: “Automobile body polish and cleaners, industrial and
institutional”
NAICS code: 3256127121

At the NAICS’ page index (
http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics/framesrc.htm ) you can search by
NAICS codes, key words, or SIC codes (Standard Industrial
Classification, system established in 1987, replaced by NAICS in 1997,
but still in use by some agencies and publications), to find category
descriptions and NAICS/SIC correspondence. You won’t get product codes
here, and searching by a complete product code would be of no use.
Just categories. For the general category of your search, SIC code
correspondences is:

NAICS 325612: “Polishes and sanitation goods” – SIC: 2842: “Specialty
Cleaning, Polishing, and Sanitary Preparations”

So far, the information available for free.

For information available on fee basis, you can try Stat-USA, (
http://www.stat-usa.gov/ ). By the way, they organize the information
by the SIC system. I suggest you visit the State of the Nation page (
http://www.stat-usa.gov/econtest.nsf ), click on the title
“Manufacturing and Industry”, and you’ll get a comprehensive list of
links to documents, several of them related to your subject, like
“Manufacturing and Trade, Inventories and Sales” (
http://www.stat-usa.gov/stemplate.nsf/validate?OpenAgent&dbID=online.nsf&filekey=mtis.cen
); or “Shipments, Inventories and Orders” (
http://www.stat-usa.gov/stemplate.nsf/validate?OpenAgent&dbID=online.nsf&filekey=S-I-O.pdf
); or else “Wholesale Trade Sales and Inventories” (
http://www.stat-usa.gov/stemplate.nsf/validate?OpenAgent&dbID=online.nsf&filekey=whsale.cen
). They will all lead you to a login page, where password is required,
and they’ll invite you to subscribe for $175 a year or $75 quarterly.

To make sure the information they provide includes the one you’re
looking for, in case you consider the possibility of subscribing their
service, I sent them an email -that they haven’t answered yet- and
also recorded a message at their telephone service –all this contact
information is at their web site. If they ever answer, I’ll post it
here as a clarification.

Another source I tried is the National Technical Information Service (
http://www.ntis.gov/ ) , but it doesn’t seem to be of much help, as I
explain below, but it’s still worth mentioning it, though. Clicking on
the Hot Products section, you’ll see all the Best Sellers’ collections
( http://www.ntis.gov/products/bestsellers.asp?loc=4-2-0 ). The first
is the Business one. Click on the last title of it named “US Industry
and Trade Outlook”, that links to the corresponding page (
http://www.ntis.gov/products/bestsellers/industry-trade.asp?loc=4-2-0
), where you’ll see a general description. This Outlook is a for sale
publication of business information produced by the International
Trade Administration (ITA). Every chapter is dedicated to a specific
industry, and chapters can be purchased individually and downloaded.
By clicking on “Individual chapters available for download” you get a
page where you can select the chapter you want to purchase, and has a
description of each (
http://www.ntis.gov/products/bestsellers/industry-trade-chapters.asp?loc=4-2-0
). Unfortunately, as I reviewed thoroughly those descriptions,
particularly the chapter 11, the segments you’re interested in don’t
seem to be covered. However, I sent an email to the team that produced
the information regarding chemical industries at the ITA (contact
information at http://www.ita.doc.gov/td/chemicals/contact.html ). As
I told you for other sources, if I ever get an answer I’ll post it as
a clarification. Anyway, all this information I gave you regarding the
US Trade and Industry Outlook, particularly the contact information,
is useful in order to do further research. Those teams are constantly
developing new information, and it’s likely that in a near future data
regarding your search be available.

I also tried the industry associations’ lead. One that proved not to
be much useful is the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and
Restoration ( http://www.ascr.org/index.shtml ) one of whose
associated institutes is the Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Institute
( http://www.ascr.org/institutes/cuci/index.shtml ). Although they
have good and thorough resources for the industry members needs, they
lack of statistical information, as I confirmed by phoning them.

Instead, the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (
http://www.apaa.org/Home.asp ), which includes a Trim Segment (
http://www.apaa.org/Member_Community/Trim/Trim.asp ), publishes and
sells the Aftermarket Factbook (
http://www.apaa.org/Market_Research/Aftermarket_Factbook/Aftermarket_Factbook.asp
) for $150 for non-members and $ 75 for members of the Association. I
phoned them at the numbers available at their website, and they told
me that it has information about automotive appearance care products,
including consumer –but not industrial- spendings.

Johnnie, this is the best I could do for your search, through the web,
email and telephone. I eagerly hope it’ll be useful. Please do not
hesitate to ask for clarification if you need it.

Tanks for a very interesting and, again, challenging question.

Best regards,

Guillermo

Dear Johnnie,

I've just received an email from the International Trade
Administration, asking me what specific statistical data would be
interesting, in order to help. So, in order to take the best possible
from this opportunity, please tell me, what specific market statistics
-besides consumer and industrial spending- would you prioritize?
Please, the sooner you answer will give us the better possibility of a
response. Please note that this is a possibility, but not a certainty,
to get more information. Thank you.

Regards,

Guillermo

5) Tire care products
6) Vinyl protectants
6) Waxes and poloshes

Dear Johnnie,

Thank you for timely response. I'll reply the email to the ITA with
the specific needs you posted. Please consider that they might not
have all of this information, but possibly some of it. In any case,
it's worth to give it a try since they've answered my request. I'll
inform you back as soon as I get their feedback.

Regards,

Guillermo
