Home insurance question.

I'm American, but I'm living in London. My sister is also American
and currently lives in Philadelphia. She travels a great deal and met
her fiance (a British guy) while here in London visiting me a couple
years ago. They have been doing the long distnace relationship thing
but hope to get married by the end of the year.

In any case, while my sister was over here in London last month, she
spent a couple nights with me at my flat. One of the nights we were
out drinking, we came home to find my flat burgeled. Of course we were
devistated as we assumed the flat was totally secure.

Among the items stolen, my laptop, my sister's laptop, my camera and
my sister's Rolex.

I have my own insurance here, so I will ultimately get my laptop replaced.

How should my sister proceed with her insurance claim?

Some explination:

1. My sister has home owners / content insurance with Allstate in the USA.

2. The Rolex and laptop were purchaseded using my sister's fiance's
UK-based Platinum American Express Card which has purchase protection
up to 20K (365 year period)for items bought within 90. Both the Rolex
and laptop meet his criteria. Both she and he have read through this
policy here: http://www.americanexpress.com/pes/uk/benefits/include/maincontent/platinum_summ_benefits.pdf

3. I have home insurance as well, but would prefer not to claim my
sister's itmes on my policy.

So finally, here are the three questions I want answers to:

1. As far as replacing my sister's items, is it better to go with
Allstate in the USA or American Express UK purchase protection?

2. If my sister were cheeky and claimed on both policies would she be
found out? Is there some international database?

3. My sister is saying that I should pay her deductible (excess) since
it was my apartment and I am responsible for the security of my own
apartment. Is this out of line? Does this usually happen when
someone else's belnongs are stolen your flat?

Thanks,
slug

Hi Angela

Why on earth does a nice girl like you call yourself 'Slug'?

What I would suggest is that you should shop around for a Loss
Adjustor. These are guys who know the insurance racket and how best to
process a claim. Even if you don't hire one, just talking things
through could help.

Yes! Insurers here in the UK do have a database of claims, mainly for
picking up serial claimants and fraudsters.

It's not a good idea to make any false statements as this could well
invalidate your cover.

I hope that you reported the incident to the police!

All the Best
