I have found many resources that tell me how to stop the brakes from
squeaking on my car. But I haven't found any where people say a
particular method actually works.

I am looking for credable testimonials that say a particular method of stopping
brake squeaking actually works (even if only occationally)

Some methods I've heard of include: Lubegard Squeak Relief spray,
other sprays, pastes and goos on the back of the pads, copper paste on
the backside of pads, stepping hard on the brakes several times to
remove glazing, shaping the pad with sandpaper..

You don't have to answer this second part specifically but this will
give you some context...

I have a 1998 Chrysler Sebring. The brake pads were replaced about
15,000 miles ago. It started squeaking just 3,000 miles after the
replacement. They squeak only at low speed, when slowing from 20MPH to
0. If I apply the brakes very hard, they don't squeak. On occation, I
feel and hear a lower toned rumbling or grinding when I near a stop; I
feel this mainly through the brake pedal.

I took it to a Chrysler Dealer who (after $400 of brakes service) said
that there is nothing wrong with the brakes. The trouble is, I will be
unfortunately forced to shove toothpicks in my ears if this sound
keeps up.

You may go to any local parts store in your area, and ask if there are
shims available for your car.

I actually had a 2000 sebring and I also had squeaking brakes, even
after having my rotors and pads replaced. I did not solve this
problem until my car was totalled while it was parked, however, I had
been told that this is likely brake dust and that is should not really
worry about it.

frankcorrao-ga, Thanks for the advice but that puts me between a rock
and a hard place... While, totaling my car would eliminate the
problem, getting to work would become more difficult. And I'm not
worried about it except for the issue with the toothpicks... RE: my
original post.

I've heard that break dust causes it as well. When I wash my truck, I
spray through the hubcap with the hose and it results in a lot of dark
liquid washing out. You could try that and see if it helps.

It may also be that your rotor(s) need to be replaced or "turned"
which means a layer of the material is removed which I think makes
them smooth again.

Good luck!

Shims have helped such a problem, just an option for you to try.

Those toothpicks, and what you might do with them if you don't find a
solution soon--really bother me.

The squealing is caused by vibration of the pad at low speeds.
Normally most breaks have what is called antisqueal shims. These apply
a little pressure to the pad and help stop the unwanted sequealing.
When your pads are changed its normal to change these anti squeal
shims but sometimes they are not. Ask if your service changed these.
If not you may want to go back and request a change. The argument of
Dust is not valid it just normally an excuse. Its the vibration that
you have to stop.
Having said this my wifes car suqeals and has done since it was new 3
years ago. We have never managed to get rid of it and you become
fixated on the squeal!

Hi there,

When I had the same problem, a few short months after having brake
work done, I took my car back to the mechanics. They told me it was
dust in my brakes, but they cleaned them for me and after that, all
was silent :)

So I would suggest you take your car back to whovever serviced your
brakes and ask them to clean off all the dust and dirt.

I found someone on a forum saying that I get my brakes very hot by
decelerating from 50mph to 0 several times in a row. I did that and
the squealing has reduced dramatically. Now it's just an occational
peep when stopping, which is quite acceptable.
