I want to find all the facilities for psychiatric patients who are
difficult to manage, in the US. I only want inpatient facilities, not
day hospitals etc. And only facilities for difficult to manage
(aggressive etc) patients. Can include adult and child/teenager.
Sometimes, aggressive behaviour such as this is termed 'challenging
behaviour'. I don't really want prisons, although in the UK we have
'Special Hospitals' which, although they are psychiatric hospitals,
have the same level of security as a prison, and look like prisons.
If there is similar in US, that would be good to have. Ideally you'd
give me both the address and the phone number of each facility.

Hello tralaga-ga,

I?ve been researching your question and I?d like to have more
information about the type of hospitals you want included in this
research.

Are you looking for psychiatric hospitals that treat patients who have
been hospitalized as part of legal proceedings? The classifications
I?ve found for these patients are: incompetent to stand trial, not
guilty by reason of insanity, mentally ill prisoners, mentally
disordered sex offenders and sexually violent predators.

Do you want to include acute care closed ward hospitals where patients
are admitted (either voluntarily or involuntarily) because they cannot
function in an unlocked hospital setting? These patients may not fit
your requirement for ?difficult to manage? or ?aggressive.? These
patients may be incompetent but have not come under the jurisdiction
of the courts or gotten involved with the criminal legal system.

The more you can tell me about the context of your question, the
greater the likelihood that I will be able to find the information you
need.

I look forward to your clarification.

tralaga-ga,

I have not been able to find any comprehensive directory of facilities
in the US that meet your specific criteria.

However, the list at this site:

http://www.pitt.edu/~cnsweb/cnspsychiatric/pdf/NAPHS_Members_2002.pdf

includes a large number of the psychiatric facilities I've identified
that have the capacity to handle difficult-to-manage patients.

This list may be the best jumping off point for you or a researcher to
zero in on the specific facilities you're looking for.

I'll let you know if any additional information turns up.

Hello again tralaga-ga,

I have been working on your question for days and I?ve discovered that
answering your question will be very difficult for several reasons.

First, I?m still not sure what kind of hospitals you want to include
in your list. In the US, there are many classes of psychiatric
hospitals and mental health service providers. I believe the
populations you?re inquiring about are the acute mental patients who
are placed in closed hospitals through either civil or forensic
commitment procedures. Years ago this population was usually served by
public psychiatric hospitals operated by the states. Now, many states
have transitioned their state hospitals to serve mostly
forensic/prisoner patients. How hospitals are classified, licensed and
used is determined by both federal and state laws which means that
there isn?t a uniform standard or listing or directory of psychiatric
facilities.

A large proportion of mental health systems/psychiatric hospitals
serve the ?behavioral health? population. These are patients who are
in alcohol/drug/substance abuse programs. The directory suggested by
pafalafa-ga provides a listing of this type of facilities.

After several hours of research I have not been able to find a
national list or directory of psychiatric hospitals. Instead, I?ve
located several directories that have compiled these lists on a
state-by-state basis. (geomale-ga's link leads to such a directory.)
This means that a separate search has to be done for all fifty states
to compile a national list.

I?m including several links here to help you get a better
understanding of the landscape and terminologies used in the
psychiatric treatment field. Take a look so that you can get a grasp
of the difficulties involved with finding the information you need.
Then, I suggest that you reformulate your question so I can complete
this project for you.

I look forward to your clarification.

Here you can find psychiatric hospitals and websites, you might have
to look at each one then contact them.
