I want to find all the facilities for psychiatric patients who are
difficult to manage, in the US. I only want inpatient facilities, not
day hospitals etc. And only facilities for difficult to manage
(aggressive etc) patients. Can include adult and child/teenager.
Sometimes, aggressive behaviour such as this is termed 'challenging
behaviour'. I don't really want prisons, although in the UK we have
'Special Hospitals' which, although they are psychiatric hospitals,
have the same level of security as a prison, and look like prisons.
If there is similar in US, that would be good to have. Ideally you'd
give me both the address and the phone number of each facility. |

Hello again tralaga-ga,
I have been working on your question for days and I?ve discovered that
answering your question will be very difficult for several reasons.
First, I?m still not sure what kind of hospitals you want to include
in your list. In the US, there are many classes of psychiatric
hospitals and mental health service providers. I believe the
populations you?re inquiring about are the acute mental patients who
are placed in closed hospitals through either civil or forensic
commitment procedures. Years ago this population was usually served by
public psychiatric hospitals operated by the states. Now, many states
have transitioned their state hospitals to serve mostly
forensic/prisoner patients. How hospitals are classified, licensed and
used is determined by both federal and state laws which means that
there isn?t a uniform standard or listing or directory of psychiatric
facilities.
A large proportion of mental health systems/psychiatric hospitals
serve the ?behavioral health? population. These are patients who are
in alcohol/drug/substance abuse programs. The directory suggested by
pafalafa-ga provides a listing of this type of facilities.
After several hours of research I have not been able to find a
national list or directory of psychiatric hospitals. Instead, I?ve
located several directories that have compiled these lists on a
state-by-state basis. (geomale-ga's link leads to such a directory.)
This means that a separate search has to be done for all fifty states
to compile a national list.
I?m including several links here to help you get a better
understanding of the landscape and terminologies used in the
psychiatric treatment field. Take a look so that you can get a grasp
of the difficulties involved with finding the information you need.
Then, I suggest that you reformulate your question so I can complete
this project for you.
I look forward to your clarification.
