Hi, I am looking to find the Emerald City of Oz as described in "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." I think it is in Australia and I would like more specific directions. Thanks! |

Do you have a hot air balloon or some ruby slippers with which to get there? |

Why would you want to go there? There's no place like home. |

Pink! No, no, no! The ruby slippers are for returning from Oz. If you want to go to Oz, you need to find a house in Kansas in the path of a tornado. Yikes! :) |

By golly, you're right, Ansel. I just looked at my ruby slippers closely, and there's a little label inside that says "ONE WAY PASS." The darned things are all used up. Since I live in an area of Oklahoma that is known as "Tornado Alley," I'll just have to wait for the next twister to come by. |

I dunno, Pink, but Oklahoma twisters are different from Kansas twisters. You might find yourself not in Oz but rather some sort of weird universe where republicans overspend and democrats are tongue tied! |

http://www.eskimo.com/~tiktok/faq04.html#12 4.12. Is the Emerald City based on a real place? It all depends on how you're asking the question. If you mean are the various illustrations in books, movies, and so forth based on real places, then that depends on who illustrated or designed it. In The Movie, the Emerald City was based on a pre-World War I sketch found in a German book in the MGM art Department. But the idea of the Emerald City may have been inspired by the White City, the setting on the shores of Lake Michigan for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Baum moved to Chicago at about that time, and in the original novel, W. W. Denslow shows a somewhat Moorish walled city that resembles part of the fair. The White City was principally all one color, visible from many parts of Chicago, had a lot of fantasy in it and humbuggery behind it, and after the fair ended, it quickly disappeared and Chicago was back to its normal self again |

Head to the biggest rock you can find, stand around and wait for hundreds of little people, and they will tell you to follow the yellow brick road. However, drive it instead of walking, or it will take ages. |
