Hello Incompra,
I?m glad to say ?Yes and Yes!? to both of your questions.
Yes, these tapes/CDs DO exist, but there is not a lot of variety.
Yes, research has shown that they are beneficial! The one turns up
most in my search, and appears to be highly recommended is the first
one in my answer. The rest are in no particular order.

?An impressive body of medical research documents that people who
actively prepare for an operation have less pain, fewer complications
and recover sooner. While most of this research had been buried in
medical journals and reports, this book now makes it available to you.
As a psychotherapist and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, my
clinical work, research and studies have focused on how people can use
their emotions, attitudes and human spirits to enhance the healing
process. Over the past 18 years, I have taught workshops in
self-healing techniques to more than 6,000 people in Boston, New York,
Philadelphia, London, Paris and Amsterdam.
Often in workshops someone will ask, "I am having surgery in a few
weeks. What can I do to reduce my anxiety and make surgery less
stressful? How can I have less pain and heal faster?" In response, I
developed five steps to prepare people for surgery. They give you
specific ways to feel more in control at a time you can often feel
helpless and vulnerable. They are easy to use, cost you and the
hospital nothing, and have no negative side effects.?

??I regularly use Mr. Glenn Harrold's tapes with pre-surgical
patients. The marked improvements in overall recovery have been
astounding. It has been noted by attending surgeons' and
anaesthesiologists' that surgical patients having used pre and post-
surgical conditioning with Glenn Harrold's positive reinforcement
tapes, have faster and more positive results than those patients not
having used this technique. Thank you Glenn for your valuable
contribution to the healing arts.? Autumn J. Patrick - Certified

?You can relax very well by following these directions. Some people
prefer to have this on tape so they can just lean back and let someone
else remind them of relaxing thoughts.
I recommend the relaxation tape that I made for this purpose.

If you like affirmations, the surgery tape begins with the same
relaxation messages and then adds affirmations appropriate for
surgery.

Pre and Post Surgical Self Hypnosis CD - Healing Fast with No Fear or Anxiety
$19.95 USD + S&H
?I used this recording when I was admitted to the hospital for surgery
and not only felt calm and relaxed, but the surgery went exactly as I
had progected and visualized. The CD gives the most positive
suggestions for perfect healing now for the subconscious mind does not
know about tomorrow as it lives only in present time. It is only the
conscious mind that perceives linear time and does not do much to make
powerful change. That is the powerful inner mind which takes in these
suggestions and makes them real for you so you completely feel
comfortable safe, peaceful and healed in the here and now.?

?Mind-body techniques-
Many studies have shown that when patients participate in their own
care, their overall results improve dramatically. Mind-body
techniques, such as guided imagery and self-hypnosis, are easy to do,
safe, effective, and very empowering. A variety of self-help books and
audiotapes can quickly teach you mind-body therapies that are
effective for any elective operation.?
?In addition, certain mind-body techniques may be referred to as
behavioral anesthesia. Using such therapies as guided imagery or
hypnosis has been shown to help control surgery-related pain and to
minimize the use of pain medications during recovery.?
?Many patients have found that the stress and anxiety of testing and
other presurgical procedures can be easier to handle when mind-body
techniques such as guided imagery and relaxation are used as well.?
?? Emotional and spiritual support
Maximize your healing potential by surrounding yourself with love and support.
? Bring a friend or family member to every doctor's appointment.
? Reconnect with people who care about you, and ask them to think of
you or pray for you while you are in surgery. Studies have shown that
prayer speeds recovery of hospitalized patients. More about the value
of such support is included in Peggy Huddleston's Prepare for Surgery,
Heal Faster program; see "Preparing for Surgery with Mind-Body
Techniques."
? Consider short-term psychotherapy if anxiety is overwhelming you. A
therapist may provide valuable advice to help you cope.?

Cue-Controlled (Not a tape, but interesting!)
?Cue-controlled relaxation is a powerful tool for calling up the
relaxation response and is especially useful after joint replacement
surgery. With this approach, you learn to use a specific cue as a
signal to elicit relaxation.
"It's one of the very best relaxation techniques for people preparing
for joint replacement surgery," says clinical health psychologist
William Deardorff, Ph.D. Among other things, cue-controlled relaxation
can be used to cope with nausea after anesthesia and pain after a
total joint replacement. It can also be used to prepare for an
uncomfortable procedure such as manipulation of a new hip joint in the
unlikely event it becomes dislocated right after surgery. This
relaxation technique can also help you relax during stressful
situations such as discussing your concerns about having joint
replacement surgery.?

?Several of the studies reviewed for this paper used assisted music
interventions in the surgical area with direct interaction between the
patient and a music therapist. Robb, Nichols, Rutan, Bishop & Parker
(1995) studied pediatric patients hospitalized due to injuries from
burns to determine the effects of music assisted relaxation on
preoperative anxiety. Subjects in the experimental group received
music assisted relaxation (MAR) with relaxation training and guided
imagery. Under the direction of a music therapist, these subjects
received music interventions before surgery, during transport to
surgery and in the recovery room.
Patients who received MAR showed a significant decrease in
activity and anxiety levels from transport to surgery (P<.05) as
reported by medical staff. Findings from the State-Trait Anxiety
Inventory for Children (STAIC) also showed a significant decrease in
levels of anxiety. In similar research, Chetta (1981) studied children
scheduled for elective surgery. Patients in the experimental groups
listened to songs reviewing preoperative information immediately after
receiving instructions the evening prior to surgery. In addition, with
the presence of a music therapist, patients in experimental group two
listened to music just before induction of preoperative medications on
the day of surgery. Patients in experimental group two were observed
as less anxious than were the patients in either of the other groups
(P<.01). Patients who had not received music listening the day of
surgery showed no decrease in anxiety.?

Preparing for Successful Surgery: An Implementation Study
?Conclusions: Patient response to a perioperative mind-body program
was favorable. Most patients listened to the program CD at least once,
and a third used the CD repeatedly, as recommended. The majority of
patients who used the CD felt it had been helpful and would use it
again. Program participants experienced less anxiety on the night of
surgery.?
