Howdy Brenda,
By using Google's Map services, we can determine the distance and driving
time from Chicago's Union Station at 225 S. Canal St. to the John Hancock
Building at 875 N. Michigan Ave.
http://maps.google.com/
"2.2 mi (about 5 mins)"
A few tips for you. Exit Union Station on the Canal Street side, and tell
the cab driver to take you to the "Hancock Building." Don't tell the driver
the "John Hancock Building" because no one in Chicago calls it that.
There are several places to find out the cab fares in Chicago, one of the
more expensive rates in the United States, but the Schaller Consulting "Taxi
Fares in Major U.S. Cities" page has some current information.
http://www.schallerconsult.com/taxi/fares1.htm
Initial charge - 2.25
Initial distance - 1/9 mile
Mileage charge - 0.20 per mile
Mileage distance - 1/9 mile
Even though the Wikipedia page on "Taxis of Chicago" gets the initial charge
wrong, they do have the correct information on what is called "wait time."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxis_of_Chicago
"Additionally, each 36 seconds of time elapsed, known as 'wait time', is $.20.
This charge is in place to ensure the driver still makes money if the cab is
stuck in bad traffic."
For your trip, your base cost should be $5.85 to $6.05. Depending on the time
of day and day of the week, you could have 2 minutes of wait time, even on the
relatively short distance you have to go, so add on $.60, and even though it
is optional, a tip of 10% is not unusual.
Total cost, with tip and estimated wait time, would be around $7.00.
If you need any clarification, please feel free to ask.
