Question ID: 710669
I use Outlook Express for all of my e-mails, sending, receiving,
archiving, etc. I have separate folders that I move my e-mails to
when I receive them in my in box. I want to save these e-mails to a
cd when I finish with a client so that I have the copies of all
e-mails in case I need them in the future. How can I save specific
folders at one time onto a cd. I know you can save each individual
e-mail but I have anwhere from 300-600 e-mails per folder that I need
to save and that would just take too much time. I don't really care
in what order they are saved just so long as I can get to them if one
day I need to. Thanks for your help. By the way my operating system
is windows XP.

Hi kunjakim,

Please follow the instructions below and let me know if serves your purpose:

Open up My Computer or Windows Explorer and create a new folder,
giving it a name that categorizes the messages you want to archive
(use the email folder name that contained the messages). Open this new
folder.

Open Outlook Express (OE) and arrange the OE window and the new folder
window so that they both fit on your monitor. (Right-click task bar
and select Tile Windows Vertically).

In Outlook Express open the folder you wish to archive and highlight
all the messages in the message list. Left-click on the highlighted
messages and hold the mouse button down as you drag the messages from
the list and drop them into the new folder window. The messages will
be copied into the folder as separate .eml files, and the name of each
individual file will be the subject line of the original message.
NOTE: all messages must be marked as open for this to work. You may
need to click on each individual message to open it before copying.

Copy the new folder(s) containing the .eml message files to disk, Zip
disk, or CD-ROM, etc. to create your archive.

This creates a copy of the message with the extension EML. By default,
Outlook Express handles these files and you can open your back-up
message copy by double-clicking it. You can also import it to Outlook
Express (possibly on another computer) by grabbing it with the mouse
and dropping it onto any folder in Outlook Express.

Looking forward to your clarification.

Best regards,
Rainbow

To save the entire folder as a single file, you must first find your Store Folder.
1. Open Outlook Express
2. Click Tools > Options
3. Select the Maintenance tab
4. Click the Store Folder... button
This will identify the directory in which your Outlook Express
files are located.
5. Copy the entire string by selecting and pressing Ctrl+c.
6. Click Cancel and then Cancel again.
7. Exit Outlook Express

Next, you must open the folder that you just located. The quickest way
is to click Start > Run, and paste in the address you copied and press
OK.

As for burning these to a CD, that really depends on which software
you're using (ie, Roxio, Nero, Windows). Generally, though, you should
be able to create a new data CD project and then drag and drop the
folder you want to back up into the window of the CD burning software.

To restore these folders in the future, you can drag them back into
Outlook Express's Store Folder (with OE closed). Outlook Express will
read the file when you reopen.

Note that this option assumes that you will always use Outlook Express
for your emails and that Outlook Express will always use .dbx files
(which it has, for as long as I remember).

Hope this helps.

To back up your mail folders:

1.	Click Options on the Tools menu.
2.	On the Maintenance tab, click the Store Folder button.
3.	Press the TAB key to highlight the store folder path,
then press CTRL+C to copy it to the clipboard.
4.	Close Outlook Express.
5.	Click Run on the Start menu.
6.	Press CTRL+V to paste the store folder path, and then click OK.
7.	Copy all mail folder DBX files as well as the Folders.DBX file to
your backup media or temporary folder. It is not necessary to copy
newsgroup DBX files as these cannot normally be imported. It is
essential that you include Folders.DBX in your backup. Once the above
files are copied to the folder then burn them onto the cd using your
cd burning software.

To restore your mail folders:

1.	Copy the backup copies of your DBX files to a new empty folder on
your hard disk.
2.	In Outlook Express click Import on the File menu, then click Messages.
3.	Select Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and click Next.
4.	Select Import mail from an OE6 store directory and click OK.
5.	Browse to the folder with your backup DBX files and click Next.

In the comment

4. Click the Store Folder... button
This will identify the directory in which your Outlook Express
files are located.

You may not be able to see the whole string to your store folder. In
XP, this is because hidden files are turned off.

Go to your desktop and double click 'My Computer'
Tools
Folder Options
click the View tab
Tick the 'Show hidden files and folders'

Now when you go back to Outlook Express and show the store folder you
will able to see the whole string

hope this helps
