This has popped up on Google Answers before and no one got 4616.

I also found it in a forum... one way 4616 can be derived is:
"1, twenty-five divided by five = five
2, 1+2+3x4 = 15
3, 12 x 0 =0
4, 101 - 99 = 2

if you add the numbers
1, ( twenty, five , five , five ) = 4
2, ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 5, ) = 6
3, (12 x 0 ) = 1
4, ( 1, 0, 1, 9, 9, 2 ) = 6
you then put the numbers together which is 4616"

This is thanks to Joanne71 at http://123quiz.net/buzz/viewtopic.php?p=766

I'm not sure if that is what the quizer is looking for... but it is
one approach (of apparently countless ways to approach this problem).

After closer inspection, I don't like how part 3 is calculated (the 1 in 4616).

I'm on another trail using roman numerals, but I can't quite get to
4616. Here is what I have so far:
TWENTY-FIVE DIVIDED BY FIVE =
I,V,IV,D,DI,DIV,I,IV,V,VI,I,ID,D,D,I,IV,V (that is all the roman
numerals within the phrase)
= 1+5+4+500+501+504+1+4+5+6+1+499+500+500+1+4+5 = 3041

1+2+3x4= 1+2+3+10+4 = 20

12x0 = 1+2+12+10 = 25

101-99 = 101+10+1+1+99+9+9 = 230

Add the numbers = D,D,M = 500+500+100 = 1100

So the grand total: 3041+20+25+230+1100 = 4416

Similar to 4616... see anything I missed?

Heh... I just spotted it myself... look at the name of the puzzel:
"A mathematical puzzel" = M,M = 100+100 = 200

4416 + 200 = 4616

What do you think, do I win a prize?

@ jack_of_few_trades-ga

your answer was as close as i got to the required 4616 but 12x0 = 0
does not fit the pattern... that is assuming they are applying the
same logic to each part of the puzzle

@ jack_of_few_trades-ga

please ignore the title.. that was something i added when posting the
question here... the puzzle as presented was as follows:

TWENTY-FIVE DIVIDED BY FIVE =

1+2+3x4 =

12x0 =

101-99 =

Add the numbers

Yeah, that first attempt I gave is quite shady after further
inspection. I'm pretty sure the second attempt is on the right track.
Getting 4416 through logical means can't be a coincidence...

I can't figure out the 200 I'm missing though, so perhaps someone else
can chime in with some help.

@ jack_of_few_trades-ga

hi.. i was just exploring your suggestions and noticed a flaw...

M = 1000 and not 100 as you have used in your calculations

sorry ;o(

M is 1000 and C is 100

hi jack_of_few_trades-ga,

U need explaination for (12 x 0 ) = 1 , Simple

( 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 5, ) = 6 U agree with this one, It is nothing but
non-zero element's count

Similarly
( 12, 0, 0) = 1

got it ...

@ Nayan

u had me all excited there for a min but i dont think that is right

using the logic you have applied to line three of the puzzel to line
two would give:

1+2+3x4 = 15

1,2,3,4,15 would give 5 and not the required 6

im still working on the assumption that the method/logic must be
applied to each line in a consistant manner

thankyou for your input

well i think line (1) could also be interprited as 20-5/5=19 or (20-5)/5=3
