How about "He was a credit to his race"? Sportswriter Jimmy Cannon wrote of boxer Joe Louis, "He was a credit to his race ? the human race?" http://www.cmgworldwide.com/sports/louis/quotes.htm Could that be what you're thinking of? Archae0pteryx (not a researcher) |

I wonder if you're thinking about a poem called "Mr. Z" by M. Carl Holman (which was in my high school poetry book "Sound and Sense")? The last line is "One of the most distinguished members of his race." It's in the obituary of someone who tried, his whole life, to not be perceived as a member of his race. |
