I have friends who just purchased a hewlett packard laptop. Included
was a HP Mobile Remote Control, which is the size of a credit card,
and they can store it in their pc card slot. They have no use for it
as this is for
their office computer... I also have a laptop with wireless LAN,
bluetooth etc capabilities (Acer Travelmate 8100) and they offered
that I could have the Remote Control if I can use it. I have searched
for info on this remote, and have tried to set it up on my computer. I
don't know
what kind of wireless technology it uses...I believe it is infared.
Is it possible to use this HP accessory on my Acer Laptop or was it
created so I couldnt set it up on my non-HP computer? If it is
possible for me to use it, where can I find the neccesary drivers
and/or get Windblows XP to recognise it? Any help would be
appreciated! |

Does this have anything to do with it?
HP Mobile Remote Control Express Card

If so, there's links to drivers and such on the right, however I don't
think the solution is that simple. Let me know if this helps.

Here's a manual for an HP Mobile Remore Control, note your part number
might be different, you didn't provide the model number of the HP or
the card.
Quick Reference Guide
HP Mobile Remote Control
Document Part Number: 367174-001
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00309482.pdf
This will give you some information.
I found this:
This guy called it HP's "Wireless Assistant"
http://www.notebookreview.com/mobile/default.aspx?newsID=2643
..."HP also includes some proprietary programs, and I installed those
just to see how they worked. The manager for the QuickLaunch buttons
doesn't do anything for me; I don't want to change them from their
default functions. The included "Wireless Assistant" is a waste of
time and slows down the boot process -- as far as I can tell, all it
does is let me know whether my Wi-Fi is on or off..."
Which led to this:
It's near the bottom..
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2483&review=HP+Compaq+Business+Notebook+nc6120
..."The HP notebooks come with a software program known as HP Wireless
Assistant which helps make it easy to configure a wireless connection
and also provide security protection from hackers..."
Here's the exe file at HP, note the list of supported laptops.
HP Wireless Assistant ? software and drivers
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/hpcpqnk/us/download/22891.html
..."Add wireless.exe for customers. This utility is used to adjust
Wireless Devices State (ON or OFF). Wireless Devices must be enabled
in Windows Device Manager, F10 Computer Setup or Wireless button
before state can be successfully changed..."

Hi, thanks alot for your reply. I apologize for the delayed response -
i was under the impression that Google was going to notify me when
this question was replied to, but I just happened to check. Anyway, I
have found a couple of those sites. What would be helpful is if this
device is actually compatible with other laptops (like my Acer 2100)
rather than the HP models that they have listed. Should I assume that
they made it exclusively work for the HP models, or are there ways of
making this work on mine? When I tried to load that driver, it said
"this software is not supported on this system", but it didnt say
anything about hardware. I appreciate you efforts as well as your
asking for clarification :)
