Dear 10minute, Here are the demographical figures you asked for: -- The Jewish Population of Vienna -- According to the 2001 Austrian census [1], 6988 Jews were resident in Vienna then. Austrian Census is held in 10-year-cycles with the next Census being due in 2011, so this is the best data currently available. On 13 March 1938, when Austria was annexed by Germany, the number of Jews resident in Vienna was 167,249 [2]. -- The Jewish Population of Western Europe -- In 2005, the estimated Jewish population of Western Europe (defined as France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Ireland) was 995,262 [3]. In 1933, the estimated Jewish population of Western Europe (defined as France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Ireland) was 750,800 [4]. Hope this answers your question! Did not intend to set off such a storm of controversey about definition of Western Europe. (caps?) Yes, I had actually included even Italy, Scandanavia, Germany, Austria... Probably Czek Republic, Slovakia and Poland in my intended version of Western Europe. But now it occurs to me that I was careless in not defining it myself. Maybe Scriptor should have given us a figure for each possible version of Western Europe in order to "earn" his five stars, but as it is, am grateful to have the links he has provided and will enjoy pouring over all possible demographics and definitions. (Actually: 4-1/2 Stars) 10-minute |

The choice of countries in Western Europe is quite limited (apparently take from one of the sites), but Scriptor's links give in information for any other countries you wish to include. |

Keep in mind that Western Europe as defined in that link doesn't include Germany and Austria (as well as many other countries of Western Europe)! It's not really a complete answer, in other words. |

Germany and Austria are not part of Western Europe. They belong to Central Europe. I am European - German, to be more exact -, and I know what I am talking about. Scriptor |

That's ridiculous. I can almost guarantee you that the original questioner wanted Germany to be included in the statistics. Germany is an original signer of the treaty that created the European Community. In the minds of most English speakers, any place not behind the Iron Curtain - including West Germany and Austria - is part of Western Europe. If there's a distinction made in Germany between "Western Europe" and "Central Europe," I can assure it's not one made in English-speaking countries. |

My tense was off. I meant to say "any place that was not once behind the Iron Curtain"... |

"As defined by the United Nations, as defined by the United Nations, [Western Europe] is comprised of the following nine countries: Austria Belgium France Germany Liechtenstein Luxembourg Monaco Netherlands Switzerland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Europe I'd go further to say that most Americans (I'm assuming the original questioner is one) also include the UK, Ireland, Italy, and probably Spain and Portugal too. And certainly the Scandinavian countries. But even the UN's conservative description includes Germany and Austria. |

Actually, subdivision of Europe is changing with times. It was Eastern and Western Europe during the cold war, Now it is EU old and new members, and applicants. There really is no point guessing what the asker wanted. If she wants to know more, she can so RCF. |
