My Google search box in Firefox installation (at my office not my work
computer) often comes up with predominantly UK or Australia sites

Have you tried your options settings?
On the toolbar click> options.
Click tab> search
Bottom right hand corner drop down box select> www.google.com

Just go to ://www.google.com/intl/en/
Or choose another lanuage ://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en
