My Dad is retiring from 30 years as CEO of a medium-sized sports
organization and considering getting part-time work as an attorney or
paralegal to stay active and involved. Though he hasn't practiced law
in 30 years (he practiced for about 3 years before that in Charlotte,
NC), he did enjoy many aspects of legal work such as working on title
searches for real estate transactions. He thinks that he might enjoy
working in a law office part-time

Right now he's located in Newark, DE, but he and Mom have tentative
plans to relocate to Southern Pines, NC. Which is good, since his law
degree is from UNC (1965) so that might help make connections for him.
He's still a member of the North Carolina Bar in good standing, if
that helps.

Dad visits NC from time to time, and has a few contacts for local
attorneys. But what else can he do to explore this possibility. Are
there others who've chosen this option as a retirement job? It seems
smart for a law firm to hire retirees like him, is that already
happening?

Can you find organizations that might be able to help him? Or
whatever ideas you can suggest would be great.

Greetings! It's wonderful that your father is planning to stay active
after retirement. The first thing that came to mind when I read your
question was suggesting he help other retirees with their legal
concerns such as living wills and powers of attorney. He might work
with local firms to take care of their overflow in those small matters
as well as assisting in title searches when needed.

In a search for legal services for the elderly in North Carolina, I
discovered:

"The Division of Aging and Area Agencies on Aging allocate a
percentage of the Older Americans Act funds to provide legal services
specifically to older persons with the greatest economic and social
need who are not eligible for assistance under the criteria of Legal
Services. For information about legal services in your community,
contact your Area Agency on Aging or check out the Division's Aging
Services Directory which identifies a local contact for some
counties."

There are also pro bono services in Legal Aid for the elderly:

"Older people sometimes need legal assistance. For those who cannot
afford to pay privately for this assistance, Legal Services of North
Carolina, Inc. (sometimes called Legal Aid) is a possible resource for
civil (not criminal) matters. This network of non-profit law offices
serves eligible citizens across the state. Some private attorneys also
volunteer time through pro bono programs, often in cooperation with
Legal Services offices. Information available from the North Carolina
Bar Association may help in identifying and working with an attorney."

This would be an avenue by which he might donate five hours a week and
make contacts through networking.

As far as law firms hiring retirees part-time, that would be up to
each individual firm but I would think experienced lawyers would be
welcomed by any law firm because of the knowledge they possess. I
believe contacting the bar association in North Carolina will reveal
some leads - the fact he graduated UNC should definitely help, and I'd
suggest he contact the university (and any fraternity to which he
belonged) to receive contacts in that manner.

Another angle with which to approach a law firm or the county
courthouse would be as a mediator or a process server. Mediators are
becoming widely used in lieu of attorneys' services. A firm might be
interested in retaining your father part-time as a mediator as well as
a research person.

I would also suggest your father compose a cover letter and resume to
send to firms in Southern Pines introducing his talents and outlining
his interests. In the letter, he would explain he is retiring to
Southern Pines and is seeking part-time research work for local firms
because he wishes to remain active in his profession. He should
stipulate he has no interest in passing bar (if that's the case) but
that he wants to help with title searches and other research. As I
stated previously, I believe any firm would welcome such assistance.

The web page has live links on all the names of the attorneys which
lead to pages where the telephone numbers may be found. I also
checked paralegal services in North Carolina and found the North
Carolina Paralegal Association which offers a job bank. I searched
the job bank for past three months and have posted the link below.
This might be a viable networking source.

I hope these suggestions assist your father in his quest. Should you
need clarification, please ask.
