Hello hilbury-ga,

Thank-you for your question.

You can discover the meaning of the word "Tafel" by using any of the
online German-English dictionaries. I have summarised a few of the
word's meanings below along with the reference to the dictionary.

"blackboard -- die Tafel
board -- Brett; Tafel; Tisch
board -- die Tafel
plate -- die Tafel
plate -- Teller; Tafel; Platte
table -- Tabelle,  Tisch,  Tafel
table -- Tabelle; Tisch; Tafel; Verzeichnis
table -- Tafel
table -- Tisch; Tafel; Tabelle
tablet of chocolate -- eine Tafel Schokolade"

"bar -- die Tafel (Schokolade)
bed -- die Tafel
blackboard -- die Tafel
board -- die Tafel
to make a move -- die Tafel aufheben
pane -- die Tafel
panel -- die Tafel
plaque -- die Tafel
plate -- die Tafel
sheet -- die Tafel
slab -- die Tafel
table -- die Tafel
tablet -- die kleine Tafel
tablet of chocolate -- eine Tafel Schokolade
to write a word on the blackboard -- ein Wort an der Tafel anschreiben"

"chalkboard (Am.) 	Tafel {f}
table 	Tafel {f}
plate 	Tafel {f}
board 	Tafel {f}
blackboard 	Tafel {f}
slab 	Tafel {f}"

Translated literally "Tafel Music" therefore means "Table Music" in
your context. In the 16th and 17th centuries "tafelmusik" was common
as background music at feasts or banquets and could be inferred to be
music to be played while people were eating at tables at large social

So in modern terms, Tafelmusik is highbrow "dinner music" or "after
dinner music" or "background music" for a gathering.
