My husband's uncle (Hal Smith) was the catcher for the St. Louis
Cardinals for 6 years. Last year, he sent us two photos that he had
copied. He had signed them both next to his likeness, and in the
letter, he joked that if we could get the other two people to sign
them, then maybe they'd actually be worth something. The two photos
were of him tagging out Willie Mays and Hank Aaron at home plate. For
my husband's birthday, and while these two people are still with us, I
would very much like to try to get their signatures on the photos
also. I need help in getting an email address for each of these two
people or an address that I could write to them explaining the
situation?

Beartrainer --

Great question for the opening day of the 2002 baseball playoffs -- in
which both the Aaron's and Mays' old teams are playing (the Braves and
the Giants). Say Hey! -- so are the Cards!

At a Spring Comdex about 14 years ago, the company that I worked with
hired Hank Aaron for about 90 minutes of autographs. Not just did it
fill the Zenith Data Systems booth, but when our serious VP software
development realized that his childhood idol was there, he melted!

Almost all retired Hall-of-Famers are retained under "personal
services" contracts with the team that allow the retirees additional
income -- while continuing to promote the team locally. We had
contacted the Braves to arrange Aaron's appearance. Indeed, Hank
Aaron's foundation is based at Turner Field, so he's certainly still
working with the team.

A project this important calls for a multi-step approach. The real
question is whether you wish to try all four approaches at once, or do
the tasks serially. You'll want to enclose the picture -- and provide
a return envelope and postage:
1.	write the player directly at the ballpark.
2.	write the player care of his foundation
3.	pick a key person (or two) in team management to approach. In this
case, e-mail may be an acceptable way to seek advice on getting the
player's autograph, but recognize that it's a busy time with both
teams in the hunt for the World Series!
4.	consider writing to the speaker's bureau that handles them. Roger
Staubach's (former Dallas Cowboy quarterback) company handles them
both:

I might suggest starting with a note directed to Staci Slaughter, VP
Community Affairs. She works with Vida Blue and Orlando Cepeda -- and
will almost certainly know how best to reach Mr. Mays.
